I think straight on. Others think through the estate. Our expeiment the other week was inconclusive 'cos of a puncture in the estate.
With straight on, you get to climb for about another 100m after the junction (slower), but then it's downhill all the way to the convergence of the two routes and a better run in to the small climb before Chipstead Valley ie. you don't have to stop at the junction if there's traffic coming, or brake before the junction to "run it safely."
The distances look about the same on the [url=http://www.streetmap.co.uk/newmap.srf?x=525530&y=156145&z=3&sv=525530,156145&st=4&ar=Y&mapp=newmap.srf&searchp=newsearch.srf]map[/url] so, if we do this route on Saturday, why don't we rerun the experiment?
