Good holiday destination?

Postby mlocke » Wed Apr 16, 2008 10:23 am

Hi Guys

Wondering where I can go on holiday

I would like one where I can take my bike and ride for a couple of hours each day - preferably somewhere with some decent mountains but the missus wants somewhere to relax, hot prefereably with a decent beach i think.

Both would like places with things to do - not neccesarilly a clubbers paradise though.

Oh yes and nowhere ridiculously expensive either - probably in about a month or so.

I suggested some obvious place - South France, Majorca, Italy but looking for other ideas I may not have thought of.

I knwo the ACC mob regularly take bikes off on trips so looking for any advice

Cheers

[quote="Sean_BanciaoDad©"]Riccione, Italy. You can't go wrong. Great food, sun, numerous rides, wonderful locations? You'd love it.

He's right, you know.

Fantastic cycling for you, nice beach for Mrs Locky, nice room for both of you (at Hotel Perla) and you're an easy train ride away from Ravenna (amazing mosaics) and Bologna.

Lanzarote is a reasonable bike/holiday destination. You can pretty much cover the whole island in a week of riding. You need to be a bit picky about your resort though, as Puerto del Carmen is a dump. I've stayed in Costa Teguise which is OK, and is quite close to the hilliest part of the Island.

Not ridden a bike in Italy but it's a fantastic country. Spent three weeks there last year avec la famille and we had a blast!! Bologna is a wonderful city so if you can get there for a day or two (and if you follow Sean/Adrian's recommendation then you should do) you won't be disappointed.

But riding a bike is relaxing - why would anyone want to lie on a beach all the time

Riccione good, Catollica a few kms down the cost and a pleasant small town for a coffee, Rimini nice and just up the coast a handful of kms, Bologna a 1hr train ride. Good, and cheap, train service from Riccione station.

The only thing I would say is that Riccione is very much a cycling or beach holiday destination. If you're cycling it's great. If you just want to lay on a beach it has a big one. It did seem that it could be a bit naff seaside at certain times of year though. I think Milan decamps there, smears themselves in Mazola and lays on the beach for 10 hours a day in July/August. It would be a nightmare then. The town itself is quite nice but not that big (fishing port and the seafood is fantastic). That said a bike/beach morning and a trip somewhere else in the afternoon (train or hire a car/scooter) and you probably couldn't go far wrong.

Cycling hotel so you'd get organised rides with a guide if you wanted at the Perla. There are loads of other "Riccione Bike Hotels" but Perla is very good and run by the bloke who started and runs the franchise, others may not be up to the same standard. May is when the Novi Colli sportive is on though (up the coast a bit at Cessanatico which is also quite a nice little town and where Pantani was from) so you may have to act quick to see if there are and places left at the hotel. The Giro is also nearby for a TT and road stage so again certain bits of May could be booked out.

It gets bloody hot 30-35 and unshielded sun so make sure you take your own sun cream as the local chemists only seem to cater for ya Italian skin type and I hardly saw a lotion with a factor in double figures!

Hi ya
Went to Bennicasim in Spain last week.
Really enjoyed it. It's where Tom Boonen trains along with three other teams.
Really nice Mountains , Loveley beach. Old Spain.
Cheap to eat. We stayed in a log cabin on a site called Bontera Park.
See you soon.
