1/2 a mile out of Greater London so didn't have the chance. But it would have been Ken.

Outside the area but would have been Boris first choice, Boris second, and Boris third

Ken first choice, Sian Berry 2nd pref, and Green Party for the other 2 votes...
bit sad to see Ken go and that clown Boris getting in... At least he is a cyclist but I'm not sure about his policies - if there is any ?

With you on this Sean, Ken did a lot of good things (some not) but time for a change needed.

One policy that would have secured my vote would have been if the prospective mayor had proposed to re-introduce some of the historic London landmarks back in to full and proper use. These are tourist attractions at the moment and they could stay that way too. I mean the Tower of London or London Dungeon would be much more interesting if you could gawp at real criminals whilst they were imprisoned / being tortured. Keeping someone in jail costs a fortune - at least as much as Mr / Mrs Average earn in a year. Surely that would be better spent on people who really deserve / need it in society. Prisons are overcrowded too - so rather than take the soft option and let the baddies out early, why not take more direct measures to address the excessive prison population? I think all the candidates missed a sure-fire vote-winner there.... Maybe I should stand next time?

Have you been talking to my mum Tony? She is a staunch supporter of the reintroduction of public stocks (along with hanging, flogging and keel-hauling).

I often remember my old nan's words of wisdom, when watching the television...

"There's far too much violence on there, I'd shoot the lot of them"

Ken first, Sian second.

[quote] I'll miss him, but it was time for a change

Why was it? What was wrong?

[quote]his only previous experience was as leader of the old GLA.

That's not irrelevant experience. And he did some great stuff then, as well (sorry Sean, not picking on you personally)

[quote="Ben Okri"]Sometimes folks live through something a bit like a golden age and don't know it. I think we've been living through one such thing in London. It's easy to lose a good thing, and it takes wisdom to recognise that it is a good thing.

That's how I feel about this.

The only good news is that Ken set some things in train that even Boris and his mob won't be able to undo in a hurry.

What was wrong?

Apart from the cronyism and corruption, you mean?

How about the blatent anti-semitism? the "hug a terrorist" initiative?

So, ignoring Ken's public embracing of cultural diversity in London, you're happy to interpret that 'concentration camp guard' episode as anti-semitism (and not just part of a sustained - and ultimately successful - hatchet job by the Evening Standard) but don't mind Boris' use of the word 'picaninnies' or his ranting about Africa and Africans?

And cronyism? Boris will be relying heavily on the longest-standing form of cronyism in politics in this country - the old-school-tie network.

[quote="marco"]Its a funny old world!

Indeed it is. I think a "none of the above" candidate would have got a landslide win.

BTW - I voted for Boris 'cos I thought it was probably the best way of throwing the whole ridiculous position (ie the Mayor) into disrepute and removing an entirely unneccessary layer of government from our tax bill.

I have no problem with Ken's public embracing of multiculturalism, it's his private selective attitude towards it that grates with me. If Boris selects advisers and helpers who can do a job, then great. It's called delegation. If he can't (or they appear to be funnelling hundreds of thousands of pounds into accounts of their friends and lovers) then that would be croneyism, and not good.

Having said all that, I'm not prepared to lose friends over it.

Me neither. Maybe I'm just a bad loser.

But what a p*ss-poor turnout, non? The most high-profile political contest for years, and still more than one in two found something better to do than to vote
