I've not seen or followed any of it - but read that Contador used a 34*30 gear for the top of the mountain stage after having reccied the course - is that right ??

They all looked to have compacts fitted and some serious dinner plates on the back. Menchov didn't have a dinner plate and was badly over geared. I think most of them had 34s and either 28/29/30 on the back. Noever seen a drivetrain looking like theirs on a pros bike before.

Glad I was watching and not riding up there :P - it looked seriously steep towards the top.
