Bike Set Up - Advice?

Postby Snoop Doug » Sun Jun 15, 2008 8:56 pm

Howdy Y'all.

I have a couple of key longer distance events coming up. Now I've never had my bike set up by anyone, I just fiddle with it as necessary  with sometimes unusual mechanical consequences. Is there anywhere local - ish that I could take me and my steed for a looksee at the overall setup. It's just that I tend to suffer quite a lot of aches on longer rides and if I can adjust any of them away it would be good...

Cheers - Snoop

Snoop,

Dauphins Cycles at Box hill have a set up facility. I did this last year cost me about £40 but they sold me a new set of handlebars last year too, but that was well worth it.

Check Butlers - perhaps someone else has experience of them for this sort of thing?

What about De Vers in Streatham?

Specialized do a bike fit service, use their website to find out where?

Run out of ideas though now.

Good luck

I'd recommend dropping into Dauphins and get a good setup done.
On the other hand I've fiddled and fettled my position over the miles after having had a fit to get it just so. Also I suffered from bad shoulder pains on rides over 60 miles until I finally sussed my shoulder/arm position problem after the hampshire hilly.

Dauphins are very good for this. Make sure you write down all the measurements afterwards so that you have them for prosperity.

Cheers

Leave it cheeky  . Well as you know I crocked meself after some full contact gardening a while back. So, the answer is yes - and maybe I do need to just be a bit more selective. I'll be in Dauphins next Monday. Had a chat with them and I fear that adjustment to existing kit may be limited (sound of wallet opening to reveal new TT frame...?). I've wondered for a while if my old road frame is a bit too biag and p'raps the geometry is wrong. We'll see - how the hell I get this one past the committee is anyone's guess.....

So, for not much more than the cost of a new bike you can buy a jig that will tell you what size your new bike should be :? It's a wonder they haven't sold the lot.

Here's another vote for Dauphins. Take £40 in cash and leave the credit card at home, 'cos you know what'll happen :)

Well they sure know their stuff in Dauphins.....I'd forgotten how light my wallet was by the time I got back home - strange  .

Not much bleedin wonder I ache so much afte racing, practically nothing fits. I guess this come from trying to convert an old road bike into a TT machine. Short term remedy - dropped the saddle on my TT hybrid by 2.5cm. Told me what nice long thighs I have  and gave me all sorts of advice, info etc. Very happy to invest time in talking me through things. So far, I'm very impressed. Also had a shufti @ my road bike and made a few suggestions tweaks etc....

I'm runnin' out of excuses :(

Make sure you have a good run down the road on it with those loverly long thighs before Sunday.

I now how you must have felt. I set mine up on the turbo and it felt fine until I rode it on the road, walked like a 90 year old when I got off after the first two 25s I did (to the amusement of certain agreeables in the HQ  ). Couple of tips and a few minutes with a tape measure, a seat knocked up about another 5mm and it seems okay know. Fingers crossed I can still walk normally about 9.30 on Sunday or I may be making a trip to Dauphins myself.

Will do. I'll be out and about for a twiddle Saturday morning, might just swing by CSS before everyone heads off for ice cream and the funfair.....try to recruit a few more helpers to cover the rest of the season's events eh wot  (sounds of shirkers changing plans to avoid this weeks CR, arrange hair washing session, polish something shiny, read war and peace etc etc  )

I used this web site a while back with there fit system, which was very useful when buying new kit.

http://www.wrenchscience.com

You measure up various body parts  and enter it into the system and it gives things like frame size, seat height, handlebar width, reach etc.

It does now look like you need to register as a user to get access to it though. (it used to be available without logining in) :(
