There are some great pictures forom the 70's/ 80's of the Italian alps [url=http://www.paloaltobicycles.com/alps_photos/i79.html]here[/url] and if you look through them, there is a shot of the gearing they used which looks like 42 * 22 or maybe 24. (Huw take note)

Actually that last one still counts for Huw :D .
