EG to Paris and back to watch final stage

Postby Marek » Sat Jul 19, 2008 8:15 am

I have a hair brained idea to do the following on the 26, 27 and 28 July:

Sat 26th: Ride to Newhaven and get the Ferry to Dieppe.
Ride 3/4 of the 180km to Paris. Stay the night in a B&B.

Sunday 27th: Ride remaining distance into Paris.
Watch the finish of the Tour de France (Cav winning the final sprint)
Ride 3/4 of the way back to Dieppe. Stay night in another B&B

Monday 28th: Ride to Dieppe and get ferry.
Ride from Newhaven back home.

Does anybody want to come with me, don't really fancy doing this on my own, firstly as my sense of direction is not great and secondly always good to have a few riders to draft off. Let me know if you fancy it and we can have an offline chat about sorting out the places to stay etc as I can have a good look at a map and find suitable locations. Other option on way back is we just ask Cav to give us a lift in his team bus.

Cheers

Yeah don't do this by yourself Marek, you've had trouble correctly negotiating the Surrey hIlls ride at least 3 year in a row :D :D

If you're wanting to draft you're limiting your options a bit  .

Sounds a great plan but I won't be able to do it unfortunately (bang goes a great drafting oportunity for you  ). Don't know if you've been to the final stage before but it get ridiculously crowded on the Champs Ellyses. I went there in 2003 and we were by the barrier from about 10am (they were due through at 3-4pm!) and we were still second row back. I'd go for somewhere at the further end of the circuit as you'll still see them the same amount of times but see more of them, to be honest it's really all for the atmosphere, which is fantastic, as they rocket passed. A great day out though and Paris is great.

More going for the experience rather than anything else, the ride should be fun which is the main reason. I may even do it on my own if no other takers as I kind of like the idea of getting to Paris and back under my own steam. (ferry excluded of course).

Ok, I am fine with driving to Newhaven, let me know asap as I will find somewhere to stay. Was thinking we could probably stay in the same place both nights as that would work out quite well in terms of distance etc.

Cheers

Wish I could make it with you Marek, but 26th is Mark's birthday, and all would not be rosy in the Tunnell household, but I am thinking about a Paris ride later on - although not to watch Le Tour. Taking SpeedFerries to Boulogne etc.
