A fantastic book for free!

Postby Andrew G » Tue Nov 25, 2008 10:17 pm

If you have any interest in cycling, which I kind of guess you do, or like a good travelogue then this book is for you. It is a fantastic read and full of lots of good old fashioned daring do.

Richard and Nicholas Crane's "Journey to the Centre of the Earth".

They cycled this route...

on two racing bikes on a lightweight (as in chopsticks cut in half and never carrying more than 1 litre of water - PVT would be proud) tour over this terrain

The book is free on the web here and one of the best cycling/travel books I've read. Well worth making use of the office laser printer and binding machine for  .

Just read about their bikes. Custom made 753 tubing. Interesting that they reckon with race wheels they'd have tipped the scales at 17.5 lbs - not much more than some medium-top end modern carbon rigs. My half steel/half carbon Lemond is 18.75lbs so probably heavier than most in the CR peloton (and obviously the reason I keep getting spat out the back of the 19s  )

Marco I did make merry with the works laser and can bring a printed copy for you to borrow (would like it back after as it took ages to print).

Unfortunately chapter 8 seems to have a fault with the link so there is a little bit of the journey missed but only a little bit and it doesn't spoil the read.

 You had to winch out that old one.
753 that is nuts! they must have had some real good trust in the raleigh builders at the time.
We used to lust after bikes like that!

Its crazy to think he walks around Britain's coast now with an umbrella for BBC!

Hi MArco, but weren't they into walking before anyway, one of them walked the 0 parallel I think down the countryside?

I must admit to having printed this off and read t ages ago, a brilliant read, they were totally mad.

They both have always done endurance and insanity based things. Richard, who writes the book in the main with diary extracts from Nick, had previously "Run the Himalayas" and Bikes up Kilimanjaro" (sp?) was before this.

Yes they're mad, but fantastic at the same time.
