Go-Ride Session - 30th November

Postby Keith » Mon Dec 01, 2008 10:21 pm

On Sunday I went to Huw's first ACC Go-Ride Cycling Skills Session. Why? My reason for going was to lend some support to Huw and to the group. Additionally I wanted to get a few more training hours in, so rode there and back. Little did I realise that I'd find myself enjoying and learning from the session.

The venue is ideal with a wide open tarmac area for Huw to lay out his multi-coloured cones. Also there's changing facilities and loos. Perhaps most important on the day was the radiator pumping out heat on a cold wet morning.

The session involved lots of relatively slow speed, controlled (hopefully!) riding. This is often done in very close proximity to other riders. This will enable new riders to gain confidence, plus I reckon, gain a feeling of being part of the Club. The surprise for me was that us "old hands" all seemed to have plenty to learn, improving with each exercise.

So, suggest anyone new to cycling, or new to cycling in groups, heads down to one of these sessions, but also don't rule it out for yourselves. I've you reckon you've nothing to learn, go there and prove it!

Thanks Huw. :)

I'll second Keith - it was great fun, even though it was so cold at the time  I'm glad I had my superduper warm waterproof on even if I overheated a tad on the way up to the sports centre and people said I looked like a cuddly penguin (whoever's seen an orange penguin???). Anyway, I was told I couldn't wimp out, being the girlfriend of the coach

Didn't embarrass myself too much and Huw even said I was quite good - just don't expect me to push anyone up hill as I'm more likely to disappear backwards

Yes Keep up the good work Huw a genuinely testing couple of exercises and a fun time was had. Definately would be of help to someone a little unsure about riding as part of a bigger group, still good to go back to basics and make sure you have the required ability to handle a bike at slower as well as faster speeds. Shame about the weather but that can not be put down as your fault!!
Any word on the mentioned turbo trainer nights at same venue?
Anyone else interested is this easier than having a trainer night at the club house, is this poss with the pilates class happening at the same time?
