Brake compatibility

The Campag Mirage brakes on my [url=http://www.condorcycles.com/pista.html]Condor Pista[/url] are in a bit of a sorry state.

I'm gonna overhaul them to see if I can sort them out but may need to get some more.

Do I need to worry about compatibility of any sort or could I just buy anything (such as these [url=http://www.parker-international.co.uk/11435/Shimano-105-5600-10-Black-Brake-Callipers.html]Shimano 105s[/url])?

I have a used and perfectly respectable set of brakes on my old Stelvio frame. They are campag and you are welcome to them. You'd need to come round and take 'em off and away mind, that way you can have 'em for nowt. Otherwise a small charge will be incurred

If you're vaguely interested I could saunter up the garden, into the shed and take a piccie (of the brakes finbarr) for you??

I think I've got a set of Chorus calipers in the garage - the older silver ones - if you're interested. You'll need to check the drop (distance between the brake bolt and braking surface), as Campag tend to be on the short side. But the Pista has close clearances, and if you've taken Campag off it, you should be ok.

Brakes is brakes more or less. You can take any normal road ones off and stick others on. The only considerations you need to take in to account are:

1) Drop - some bikes with larger clearances need deeper drop brakes. Mirage are a normal drop (and fit over full mudguards) so any normal drop replacements will do.

2) Depth of hole the bolt goes through. On some forks the crown hole is deeper and more recessed (normally on wider more bladed profile forks). The same brakes still fit but you need a longer allen bolt for the back so that it reaches far enough through the deeper fork. If you have forks like this then you already have the longer bolt holding the brake on at the moment so when you get the new ones just use that bolt instead of the one that comes with the brake. If you want/need a new one just pop in to GBs or wherever and ask them for one.

Are they that bad. If you whip 'em off remove the blocks and then wash them with a brush and degreaser then they often come up nice and new looking and still work well. GBs have been selling off "old" style Campag brakes and had a load of pairs of Veloce ones for £20 which is the same price as replacement blocks on their own so gould be worth seeing if they have any left. Think they had Centaur for about £25 too.
