1 chain
4 punctures
1 spoke
1 pair of longs
:( :( :( :(

Oh, and 1 new year's resolution

1 chain, 1 rear mech and 1 rear gear hanger. All in one go.

Thankfully I was only 3 miles into a 40 mile ride so didn't have too far to walk back :!:

On the subject of rear mechs, if one is struggling to return to neutral (i.e at the 11/12s, but has the limiter screws properly adjusted), is there anything you can do short of dismantling, servicing and then rebuilding it?

At the moment I've squirted a lot of lube in/at it, and it's got a couple of days to sink in as I'll be on the race bike the next two days. So hopefully that'll do it. Would like to avoid having to dismantle it for another couple of months, but it is playing havoc with the indexing, so it may well have to be done...

Actually thinking about it I do have another rear mech, so maybe I'll do it anyway. But any suggestions on the old one? It is getting on for 4 years old, but surely it should last longer than that?

And sorry, I don't have time for any anti-Shimano words of wisdom!!

I did undo the cable... and it needed encouragement to move the last 1/2mm to neutral.

So like I said, I squirted some lube at the pivots in hope that'll sort it... but when I was trying to index the gears they would not work properly for more than a few runs up and down the block, then I'd have to adjust again. So I've left it for now to let it all soak in etc... hoping that'll do it.

I might have misunderstood but have you greased the cable as well? Unhook the outer from the stop and squirt some WD40 or similar down the cable / inside the outer or as much as you can and then slide he outer about or tip the bike about to get it to run through the inside of the outer. In wet weather over time it can get washed out and this just helps free things up a bit.

I haven't greased the cable... yet. But what I mean is that even with the cable un-connected, the derailleur still needs my finger to push it the last mm to neutral, so it must be something clogging the mech right?

Is the hanger straight?
Is so perhaps the internal spring had corroded/stretched/lost its springyness. in which case, rebuild time....

Remember to do all the adjustment by pulling on the cable itself rather than flicking the lever. Could just be hanger knocked out of true. Park tool website has some pretty comprehensive instructions.
Being shimano it should last forever - my XT mech on the mtb is 9 years old and the only original part along with the equally robust LX front mech.
