10 speed on a 9 speed hub-can it be done?

Postby PeteS » Sat Feb 28, 2009 3:30 pm

I recently bought a new bike and wanted to replace the wheels with the better ones from my old machine. Unfortunately, the old wheels have a 9 speed hub and the new bike a 10. Putting the 9 cassette on the 10 speed hub works fine but not vice versa. Without buying a new 9 speed cassette does anyone know if there's any method of getting the 10 to work on the 9 hub because today's clubrun proved that I've not succeeded!

Shouldn't be a problem a 9/10 freehub is the same, it's just the spacers and the sprockets that are different sizes. If it is Campag then you may find that the spacers do have to go on in the correct order - If they are the plastic ones then the black star ones go on with the big sprockets, then the yellow star spacer, then the circular ones. First time I fitted one of these cassettes I had the yellow spacer in the wrong place and the shifting was slightly out, sounds like you may have the same thing. If it's got the metal spacers then I'm not sure if the order has to be specific I just make sure I put them on the same way they came off.
