Giro d'Italia/Croatia

Postby Phil S » Sat Feb 14, 2004 5:05 pm

I'm making preliminary plans to do a partial stage of the Giro d'Italia this year, one day ahead of the real thing and then watch the actual stage finish as it arrives in Pula, Croatia (a lovely seaside town with a big Roman amphitheatre) on 23rd May

This is the rough outline:

easyjet London Stansted to Ljubljana, Slovenia 21st May, with return 24th May - £45.98 per person, inc taxes (and easyjet allow 10kg supplement of "sporting goods" so a racing bike will likely be free)

Stay in Ljubljana Friday night, set off for the (roughly) 120 miles Saturday morning... arrive in Pula in the afternoon for a swim.

Enjoy the weather and some nice wine as we watch the pros do it on Sunday...

Return to Ljubljana Monday (probably partially by rail) for a late afternoon flight back to the UK.

My dad (not a hardcore cyclist) will be coming so he can take care of luggage in a hire car... and I also speak fluent Croatian so we won't have any problems en route.

I'm looking for perhaps three or four people who'd be interested, and can sustain 18-20 mph.... if more people are interested then we could perhaps do a bit more planning and hire a couple of cars/get an extra driver???

e-mail me at ps@dalmatia.fsnet.co.uk or catch me on a Saturday club ride

i'm actually in Italy the week before on my bike, so can't make this

but what i can do is tell you about a conversation we had with Easyjet this week re carriage of bikes - it does come within the 20kg plus 10kg sporting equipment limit - so no probs there - what they did say is that they reserve the right blah blah blah, but suggested that checking in as early as possible was the thing to do

I cant make the trip but for your info.. easyjet had no problems with my bike or anyone elses on last weeks trip to majorca, the bike was not weighed at all we were just told to take it to the loading bay opposite check in, I had stuffed my bike bag full of bike clothes for a weeks stay:)
One of our group just covered his bike in bubble wrap!( he had taken off pedals though) We all checked in early just to make sure there was no probs, plane delayed 3 hours:( Hope this is of some use.

Thanks guys. I didn't think there'd be any probs with easyjet as I've been skiing with them countless times and never had any hassle taking my boots and planks.
