How to get a cheap new bike

Postby Mike I » Tue May 19, 2009 9:58 pm

Some useful tips here ... http://www.guardian.co.uk/money/2009/may/19/buying-bicycle-saving-money

Obviously nobody here will actually do this, you'll just sell the car, the house, the kids and buy some over-priced carbon bling :D . But when challenged by your spouse / bank manager / conscience ( :? ), you can tell them you followed some of these tips  .

i love the pic at the top, she looks like she is trying so hard to get some speed on that beast

And I like how their PRO TIP is just to try and haggle.

When i worked in Evans I would rather lose a sale completely than discount the bike if a discount was directly asked for.

We were quite flexible with making deals for people if we were feeling nice, but with people who come in and haggle straight away its so satisfying to just say NO :)

So you agree that Evan's are useless tossers?

Any Evans I have been in has always offered me poor service and just a general lack of knowledge all round.

They are fine for commuters and perhaps mountain bikers (thats what most of the staff seem to know about, if anything). But if you want serious road knowledge, there are many, many better shops to frequent.

Sigma Sport, Dauphin's, GB's, Corridori etc are all in reach of most ACC members, so why go an support a souless chain which won't go anywhere near as far to helping you as the afore mentioned.

Not forgetting of course, In-Gear Cyclesport in Uckfield. Although obviously this is a little further afield for most...

The thing with Evans is they are very convenient, if you need something chances are your close to a store especially in town and their also open on Sunday's
Its not as good service as proper race bike shops but the staff do do their best.
Vote with your feet if your not happy.

I agree, I like to support the local shops and not the big chains, however its down to choice and how you use it.

I haven't been in an Evans since 2005.

Consider my vote well and truly cast.
Examples please.

1. My mtb purchase in Jan 2000. Spending £1000 on a bike I got no advice other than that the rear shock could be pumped to 150psi with a standard bike pump.
2. Looking to spend similar amount on road bike, forget sizing advice or what kind of riding I intended (racing, sportives, audaxes), it was sling your leg over it mate and see how it feels. Quality.
3. Looking to buy new saddle in Canary Wharf (where admittedly the preponderance of numpty bankers looking to blow 5k so they can get a sub-broomwagon time in the Etape probably encourages sharp practice) I was directed straight to a £100 titanium-railed jobby as being a "very good saddle, is perfect for you". Cheers Vlad, but my numb ar$e could use a 35 quid Spesh BG to get some feeling back in my kn0b.
4. After new road bike's free 3 month "service" the gears skipped and they had managed to somehow stop the computer from working.

So, after that little lot GB gets my roadie business and Bike Plus or Nirvana Cycles of Westcott get my mtb biz.

But, as George says, Evans are handy and open on Sundays.
