Tri bar tape

Postby Ivor » Thu Jun 18, 2009 1:47 pm

ok, sorry another boring question today for my bike build... anyone got any tips for bar tape on tri bars?
do you wrap the tape over the ends and insert the brakes/gear levers in the same way you do with bar ends on normal bars?
was looking at a picture and it looked like the tape was actually wrapped up and taped over the gear levers.

Ivor,
You will never get a piece of tape in the same section of bar that the gear lever sits in. Fit the levers, then tape up to, or as I did, from the levers down and secore with some electrical tape.

I've only got electrical tape on mine; no bar tape.

Looks a bit silly without proper wheels: (my toy vs kids toys :) )

not 100% happy with the shifter cable routing yet either.

Ouch, no tri bar pads.....

Perhaps you ought to stick to those boots with the smaller wheels in the background

No. Definitely electrical tape.

Might be better running the gear cables underneath the base bar so they run in a straighter line into the downtube.

Yeah I had a go at that but when ran underneath the cable angle just didn't seem to work. if I made the cables long enough for the bars to turn then the cable bulged out sideways and got in the way, when short enough to be neat it restricted the rotation.
I'll have another try tonight though. should have a new chain waiting at home now too so time for a test run. :D

Mine are a bit like that and fall in to the bit short to turn fully category. Only an issue loading in to the car as I have to keep the bars straighter, they never get turned enough in a TT to be a problem. That's the gear cables, the brake snick through internal routing on the base bar. They might be a bit tight on the bend but they work fine and it's not as though you use brakes much in TTs.

What's the view on Nokon outers for tri bar set ups? They'd allow me to do neat and tight runs on my tri bars and also enable me to use the internal routing on the extentions, which I can't do with standard outers. Do they effect permance in any way, I don't want to shell out on the price of them if the shifting is going to be effected as there isn't really a problem at the moment, it would just make it a bit neater and allow easier packing away in the back of the car.

Sorry for the slight hijack at the end there Ivor.

Had the same problem - cured with a zip tie holding them together......still allows bars to turn, but they stay next to the tube.

They're pretty much essential on the bar set-up I've got.
The brake cables exist underneath the base bar, which makes the bend to the front brake really tight. The gear cables exit from the back end of the bars, which makes the bend down to the cable stops of the downtube pretty tight too. For the cables inside the bars I use standard outers, and only use Nokon for the bendy bits outside the bars.

Ta Jon, we have different bars but it sounds like the same sort of situation. It's the bend to get to the cable stops which mean I've had to have the cables outside the extensions.
