Headsets

Postby Jon H » Fri Jun 19, 2009 3:16 pm

Right, I'm confused.

The headset on my TT bike has started creaking and groaning a bit, so I took it apart to see what's what. The top end looked fine, but when I pulled the fork out the bottom bearing was looking fairly gunged up and rusty. I concluded that I'm in need of a new headset.

Now the problem is, what do I need? I've had a look at some of the usual online retailers, and there's Aheadsets, Integrated Aheadsets, Hiddensets, Directsets, Zero Stack Aheadsets, Drop-in headsets, Press-fit headsets, 36 x 45, 45 x 45, Blah blah blah...

Any headset experts out there?

I'd assume you have an integrated headset... if the top one's ok, you probably just need to pop a new cartridge bearing in the bottom and you're sorted.
I think i have a spare if you want it.
simple bits are the size (45) and the angle (36 or 45) a standard aheadset in an integrated frame is 45x45.

is it just the bottom bearing is knackered or is there damage to anything else (e.g. the crown race)?

If it's not integrated get a Chris King. Probably the last headset you'll ever buy. If it is integrated then I cannot advise as these are the work of the devil.

I presume if there's nowt to see at the bottom end (apart from a small gap between the fork & frame) then it's integrated right?

yes. on the whole. integrated will have a self contained cartridge type bearing. you'll have a recess in your frame it slots into. um, should be a picture somewhere...
integrated/internal have bits that look like: http://www.feltracing.com/08/product.as ... 8&pid=8846
