Race Report 1

Now was time to start playing after my winter training , but would I be able to stay at the party long enough to enjoy !!

The start time is 7.15 pm at Hillingdon Circuit west of London….This requires a 16 mile warm up ride from the City , register on the night ( £ 10.00 entry , £ 10.00 one time series fee ) . 2 races are run each Tuesday till the end of the Summer . E123 are released first , followed a minute later by the Cat4’ ….on pain of death are either race aloud to join each other ! .

Hillingdon is a .9 mile purpose built bike circuit, relatively flat , with the bends not being too sharp enabling riders to pedal all the way round – however it resides in a particularly exposed part of London, so cross winds tend to play a major part in your approach to the ride . Finish line is up a slight incline , which at speed can feel like a cat1 climb ! .

Early season race length is dependent on the sunset time , so this week the organiser decided to run the race starting promptly at 7pm, meaning my warm up , and comfort break stop was curtailed …I must have ridden with an extra few litres of liquids !

On the off the pace was electric , and a real shock to the system , not only in terms of effort, but reminding the body and mind how to race at speed in close quarters with 40 other riders ! One of the advantages of racing early season is that progression is built in to the race series …tonite would be approx 35 mins long , with the race commissaries only advising 3 laps to go when the light fades ….. so how were my legs ?

Well , you often hear riders say that their “feelings” are good , and I have to admit that I was feeling very comfortable , and after 10 mins , I had to look at the average speed to see if this season was slower than last ….but it wasn’t !! . Excited at the prospect I may be improving , I started to move up the peleton, but made sure I was never to exposed to too much wind ….down the back straight we’re topping over 30mph , and get it wrong for a few moments , and your in the red , fighting for dear life to get back on someone’s wheel ! .

But not this time, …..infact when the lap board went to 3 , I was in that lovely zone where its all about tactics , rather than just hanging on ….( I even had time to say hello to Richard who looked super comfortable ! ) I didn’t go for the sprint outright, making sure I avoided all the kamikaze sprinters , but was pleased to finish mid bunch , with a few extra pedals left in the tank when I crossed the line …just ahead of Matt Seaton …. ( Who was most probably coasting ! )

Happy times !

Sounds good Matt, I kind of regret not going now .. although at £20 for 35min of racing, with the 40km ride back home at night .. maybe not so
