JB Smith Road Race - Addiscombe Promotion 10/4

Thanks to Paul for organising and everyone who swamped the road in yellow to run the event (carrott cake was very nice too so thanks to whoever made that). The flags looked superb George :D .

I was driving the lead car so only picked up bits and pieces in my rear view mirror and via the radio early on although I gather Marcus did a massive pull off the top of the hill up the A25 after lap 3 and decimated the peleton with about 30-35 riders being shed.

There were a couple of digs by a solo or pair but they never got more than about 30-45 seconds, just enough for the Assistant Commisaire to move from behind me to behind them and in to the gap.

On the final lap three broke away and put a minute on to the bunch, so they were up behind me in the gap in the cars, and I got a good view of them as they raced for the win. James Shrubsall of Norwood paragon looked the strongest doing a big turn on the flat between the downhills and making his breakaway partners suffer. On the return leg up the hills they climbed together up the first hill but on the second James seemed to just go a bit harder and then looked back, saw a small gap had opened so went for it. It looked like he was just stronger and they couldn't hold his wheel rather than a big kick. He really buried himself and was hammering along in the run up to the finish hill. Obviously a bit slower up that but a well deserved win as he was the strongest in the break, although I didn't see anyone cross the line as i had to scoot off to the end of the road and try and block cars coming down for a few minutes.

I quite enjoyed myself with my Cagney and Lacey flashing light and Smokey and the bandit CB radio :P . Had to accelerate away from the turning off the A25 as you can really shift down the hill on a bike so had to get a bit of distance and then pick them up again further down, but the circuit was relatively traffic free and I wasn't aware of any problems. Certainly easier to run the race on than the previous circuit we used a few years ago in Newdigate where you got a lot of Surrey tractor "but I live here" motorists.

Cheers Andy for the report from the convoy. It was James Stuart not Shrubsall though who won. After my earlier efforts I was happy to work for my team-mates and ended up leading Simon Coles out on the approach to the hill to boost him up the climb. He was 4th with Sylvain around top 10 and I just cruised in having done my work for Si.

2nd was Mike Debney (Dynamo) and 3rd Waite "Cranky" (Pearsons).

Thanks to all of ACC for a well promoted and safe race and good cake too :-)

Oops, I couldn't get close enough to see the rider's face or he'd have got a bit too much assistance to the finish  . When you said it was James I'd grabbed the name I knew, whichever James it was though he was bloody strong today and really motoring in the final few miles.

Thanks to all the helpers and well done to James and his team. I'm not buying the Croydon Advertiser this week ..

I really thought i'd gotten in the right move when i jumped on, and so did Marcus i think, that was my hardest effort of the race with 3 Paragons going for it, alas down the hill again it was all back together.

Up the final hill to the finish i was neck to neck with Richard and it was like being in the mountains of South France all over again  he got the better of me at the top well done to him too.

Looking forward to a bit more action at Palace

Well done to Rob for finishing in 34th too, that was a hard race.

Sylv, Keith pulled alongside on his motorbike at one point and said you were looking good on the hills, very smooth were his words :) .

I did say watch out for the "Hosk".

I was impressed with Mark's dedication to marshaling at turn 4 (by the pub). He got there extra early and I noticed he was still there at 5pm when I was driving home.

Thanks to the Addiscombe community for coming along to help and to watch. Chapeau PVT.

My race was cut short with a puncture on the descent from Outwood with 2 and a bit laps to go. :(

You were not alone Keith.
I was at the back of the race providing neutral service, and was kept very busy.
I loaded up the car at the start with 20 wheels, and at the end I only had 2 or 3 that hadn't been used. I did see that you'd stopped, but at the time I was trying to regain the race with a stong rider in my slipstream at over 30mph. I had to make a snap decision whether to stop or carry on, and as you had your helmet off and were walking I took that as a sign that you'd decided it was game over.

Brilliant day out on the bike, after the TT in the morning. The rest of the day lurking around the road race.

Brilliant to see all the motorbikes, and loads of marshals out.

I was Car #3, so had the task of lurking about ready to jump in if there was a split group.
Poised at the "pub HQ" lights at the ready. Had the bike in the back and family Hewitt were all out and about with Hugo whizzing around on his new road bike.
No excitement until lap 3 and it looked like the field might be ready to split with a "long tail" of riders coming around after the pack. But still just one big main pack riding around. Expected to see two big groups on lap 4. so was ready to pounce. However, the pack had all come back together next time around so stood down.

Hugo went down to the finish line to see the riders through for the last two laps and was really excited to have rung the bell, many thanks to whoever let him do that.

Then Hugo and I rode back home finishing off with a few laps of a big empty car park to practice cornering at speed. He'll be out on the club run soon I reckon.

Brilliant day. with just a touch of sunburn. :)
