Yesterday I competed in the fifth round of the Eastern Region MTB Series rather than be murdered on the road at Bletchingley. I don't know why but this just hadn't been on my radar before, but on the basis of one race I recommend it to those who fancy some pacey racing within reasonable driving distance of London. Goes without saying that mountains don't featurely greatly, but the course near Braintree yesterday made up for it in fast, technical riding. And the rain added another dimension to the magnetic Essex mud.
Rather than classifications, the men are lumped together as either Elite, 17+ or Veterans. And with no series position to refer to I was instantly behind at least 32 other gridded riders at the start. However I was happy to climb to tenth by the finish, two hours later.
