Sunday saw me back out on the Marlow course for another 25 miler, this time with a functioning computer on only the second float day I`ve known this year. Unfortunately the first I couldn`t capitalise on as I got acquainted with the tarmac between Horsham and Crawley back in May. It was perfect, slight chill but by the time I rode up the hill to the start I was nicely warmed up. Very surprised that the two riders were DNS`s So no initial rabbits to chase, on what was looking to be a glorious day. I maxed at just over 40mph down the hill spinning my legs like crazy to carry the momentum over the gently undulating course. It felt really good, caught 9 before the turn, I was No 16, not long after the turn I was bearing down on 13, who finished with a 1:05:?. I was absolutely caning it along and started to think I might break my own PB of 58:05 . Silly me letting my mind wonder, so before I know it the time is getting to the hour mark. This was my last opportunity this year to break it. Missed out on it last year. Got back to the HQ to find I had 0:59:25 trumped my earlier seasons best of 1:00:28 which I had done only a few weeks prior!!! It also gave me a very nice vets plus of 8:35!!
Winning time was Ray Hughes with a 52:57!!!
Only one race to go now. That`s to tow Mr Munnery, who enquired after my performance in the event, suggesting that if I hadn`t broken the hour I should take up golf!!!
Nearly a 1000 miles raced this year, 3 x 100, 6 x 50 and 9x25 with a sundry of 10s thrown in for good measure, just a 15miler to go in a fortnight, then the TT bike and pointy had can be put away for another year.
