Palace 25July - results (lack of)

Well only Jack and I turned up to race for ACC last night, otherwise there was a good field. The pace was high from the start (around 24mph) and stayed high until a break got away with all of the eventual winners around lap 11, the pace then dropped a bit for us in the main bunch but picked up a few laps later as we tried to close the gap but to no avail. The chase was messy and few were willing to work up front, I believe Jack and I did more than our share of the work (did the others have team members in the break?). The chasing bunch stayed together until the end where in the second last lap Jack was leading but trying hard not to, he almost slowed to a crawl to try and force the others to go up front but they were having none of it, sticking to his back wheel. Knowing that all the main placings were in the break I decided there was no point in all of this subterfuge for lower rankings and took over from Jack and lead the bunch for the final lap, dropping off for Jack to come through on the uphill section, but it was not to be as the earlier work by Jack took its toll and fresher legs won the bunch sprint in the chasing group. Not great tactics maybe but good training I'd like to think. I surprised myself later by discovering a new max heart rate recorded during the race of 204bpm, my previous max HR was 196bpm, which ahs been the max for about 4 years, indicating the effort put in leading to try and catch the bunch? or just lack of fittness? although feeling fitter than ever. Toks any opinion? Good to hear about Hillington, maybe thats what we need in Palace - an ACC team? although I'm off on holidays for the next 3 weeks so I won't be there - good luck everyone over the next few weeks.

Well done Kieran and Jack, how many got away?...[quote]I surprised myself later by discovering a new max heart rate recorded during the race of 204bpm, my previous max HR was 196bpm, which ahs been the max for about 4 years, indicating the effort put in leading to try and catch the bunch? or just lack of fittness? although feeling fitter than ever. As long as your heart rate monitor didn't suddenly jump from say 160 to 204 then you've just discovered your new maximum heart rate. It requires a real supreme effort to find your MHR and thats what you did in the race. Its worth remembering though that HR only reflects the cardiovascular response to exercise and is not a real definition of how hard your working ( extra coffee or increased adrenalin will all was push it up a bit higher). For that you'll need a power meter. I would say your fitness levels have definitely improved - chasing down breakaways at Palace ain't for the 'I'm-just-happy-to-be-here-types :)

Hi Toks, thanks for the reply, if you look at the results on Londoncyclesport you'll see a few familiar names in the top 10, our group came in about 1min30sec or so later and only the winner of our sprint gets listed. Have you been away chasing points elsewhere??

Tim (thanks) turned up to lend his support later on, but not race due to work affecting him.

24mph that's bloody fast kieran, was exactly the same speed at Hillingdon last week in the 4ths - which is a much much faster circuit!

Nah not at all. I've had a funny old week. On sunday I went up to Oxfordshire to do a 50mile 3/4 road race. It was a last minute decision and I didn't plan it very well so I arrived at Oxford with just 35 mins to the race start. I cycled toward the Race HQ got a puncture, I got so pissed off I didn't even bother to fix it. I sat down for an hour got on a train and came back home.

Tuesday night was a friends birthday meal. Everyone was suprised when I agreed to go given that it was on a race night, even myself.... So I haven't ridden since Sunday. Tonight myself, Ajay and Slyv will be doing some TT practise. So all in all its been a nice break more psychological than physical. Have a great holiday. You'll still have a few weeks to build up for the ACC road race. By then I'll be completely burnt out and should just be able to keep up with the just for fun group :D
