SL Handicap - Wivelsfield - 28th May '09

Commissionaire PVT had his hands full with a plethora of 3rd and 4th Cats last night. I think there was a total of around 70 riders entered. When it got down to the remaining "young" 3rd Cats, he used the scientific method of even numbers in the 4th group, odd numbers in the 5th. Being and odd rider ;-) I was in the 5th of the 6 groups on the road.

5 laps of "the short course". This rolling course uses part of the A275 through Chailey. A total of 32miles.

There was definitely some erratic, unpredictable riding going on. A couple of "incidents".

  • On the first or second lap went past John Leitch who was being attended to by the medics at the side of the road.

  • On the run into the finish line the road is pretty tight and twisty, and a few bike lengths infront of me an In-Gear and a Brighton Mitre rider went down, but fortunately for the rest of the field, slid off to the right side of the road. Looked to be quite a heavy fall.

This latter incident kind of took the sting out of my advancing up the bunch for the finish line. I didn't place, but was with the leading bunch of 15 or so at the end. The event was well won by Norwood Paragon, one of their riders getting a good lead out by their team.

Still, a useful, enjoyable training ride. Average speed 25.5mph.

The only other ACC rider, Marek made me laugh at the end. I'd introduced Marek to "Ben" before the race, but it turns out he hadn't twigged it was Ben Instone. Apparently, when he was winding the pace up, Marek was saying to other riders "who the **** is that Ben guy on the front!"

That Instone guy was very impressive. Does anyone know if the riders that DNF'd were ok?

My team mate Josh has mucho road rash, and maybe a broken elbow. We're not sure yet. I know one of the others was ok, raced this morning. But Josh hit the deck pretty hard by all accounts and was looking very battered today.
