It was a long race today - 72 miles.

I tried numerous times to get in a break and managed to stay away for a while but kept getting reeled back. I noticed that there was a few riders happy to chase everything and they were doing through and off in the front which was a bit irritating.

After 49 miles, I got in another break which again got chased down and just before we were caught , I thought I would trundle off on my own hoping that a single rider may have more of a chance.

I quickly built up a lead so dialled in the Heart Rate to threshold and cracked on. After a couple of miles, I had another look around and things were not looking so good. The peleton were in single file going hard and only a 150m away. I decided to put in a big 5 minutes closer to VO2 max pace and hoped it was only a couple of riders chasing and they would give up when I get round a few bends. The increase in pace seemed to work but I could not maintain this so it was back to threshold (170-175bpm).

Through the finish line for the bell and I must have had a healthy lead as one of the safety cars waved me through and dropped behind me. There was only one snag in that the laps were 12 miles long and I had already done 11 miles on my own so this last 30 mins was not going to be fun. I had a drink every 6 mins and kept turning the legs trying to hold pace. 6 miles to go, and the safety car overtook me and I can see the pack in the distance. I cracked on but was starting to fade, my legs, lungs, back and head hurt and the pain was all getting out of hand for an old man like myself. 2 miles to go and they were very close but I knew the win was mine now as long as I kept going and crossed the line about 20secs ahead totally exhausted.

Unfortunately there was a nasty accident at the finish and a rider was airlifted to Hospital so fingers crossed for him.

Absolutely brilliant!!! Well done, Paul!!! Whoever said life begins at 40 might have a point! I'm also sure being made a VC makes you go faster.

Aww bless! someone on the Kingston Wheeler Forum (nice people by the way) is not entirely happy about Paul wins. And has alluded to fact Paul might just be a 'one trick pony' - er...ya damn bloody right he is! I just wonder if this fella's thought about getting in touch with 15 TDF wins Cav and giving him some advice about not sprinting for wins coz everyone will soon find him out. Instead maybe he could consider some breakawy wins. Damn, only bagging 4th place in the that KW road race must really have hurt. HATER!!!

Perhaps he doesnt like the fact that im getting more positive coverage than him on their forum. Looking at his results (most are at Hillingdon) it appears that he doesnt have many cards to play either.

Everybody is entitled to their opinion, but I like getting into breaks, dont get involved in mass sprints and dont care about picking up the odd point with minor places. If that makes me not the best road racer and a one trick pony then neigggghhhhh! - dont get excited Peachy.

The KW riders Ive met seem to be a good bunch of guys and I have enjoyed the races they have put on (TTs and RRs). btw if any KW riders are reading, I do hard sessions on Saturdays so was not at my best on the TTs I did recently
