Sutton Town Centre Crit

Well you were right marco it did feel like continual hill climbing :D .

That said it was a good day. Watched the womens race with Steve, Phil, Paul (otP), and Sylv before Steve went home to "prepare" . Had a bucket of coffee with Phil and Paul and Carole who'd been marshalling.

Steve reappeared and we watched the E/1/2s race at a frightening speed, race won by cornering guru Warrick Spence.

Steve and I compared notes on how much we were both bricking it and did a couple of warm up laps.

The circuit: Drag to steepening hill for 400 metres, left and still up a drag for about 50 metres, left and descend for 400, left again to join the bottom of the hill. All bends 90 degrees and the whole circuit tight.

Race started on the finish line which was at the top of the hill, so some had difficulty getting in their pedals at the start and the bloke next to me nearly fell over  .

First lap and up the hill at 26mph  :!:
Second lap, eased up and only 24mph up the hill  :!:

I couldn't keep that up and was near the back of the pack. I lost touch at the bottom of the descent when some bloke came past on the right and then cut across me and went round the corner far slower than me. Cornering is one of the few things I'm good at so this pissed me off as I could chuck it round the bends as quick as anyone so it was the only chance I had of trying to stay in contact for that little bit longer.

Now it was back to my standard Palace racing of soloing round at a reasonably consistant pace and picking people on the way round. I was fairly happy with the way it went and although the hill was tough it wasn't as bad as I thought it would be.

I was asked to pull out after the race time was up so the final laps could be contested by the leaders. I expect this and normally don't have an issue with it. Here though the field was only about 22 at the start, quite a few had dropped out, the field was scattered all round the circuit with no more than 2 riders together, I'd only been lapped by the leader (who lapped everyone apart from 2nd and 3rd places), and by 2nd and 3rd who were also miles clear of 4th. I don't know where I was in the field but there weren't many left racing so I must have been about 11th or 12th so was a bit pissed off as I was hardly going to get in the way of a bunch sprint. :?

Steve had had a great race and rode really strongly. He was with another chap and they were in 6th and 7th. With two laps left the leader lapped them but they grabbed his wheel and got a good tow. This pulled them up to 5th place who they caught on the final lap.

Steve sprinted up the hill and got 5th place, well me and most others thought he did. For some unfathomable reason they had put him in 7th, a bit of a "chat" and he was upgraded to 6th. Still mad as he was definately 5th and the bloke he beat said Steve was 5th and he was 6th.

A shame but otherwise a great experience and a big thank you to all the ACC who shouted encouragement, it helped a lot. A good amount of people watching in the High Street as well, certainly the biggest crowd I've raced in front of.

Cheers,
Andrew.

P.S. Also had a chat with Geraldine, who was marshalling, and good to hear she is back on the bike and was as cheerful as ever.

Now now Sean, one slip  . None of these bends had hidden gravel patches.

Bit dodgy this as I counted Steve in as 5th, and I caught and passed William Pearson 5 minutes before I was asked to pull out!

well done andrew and Steve for taking part, I should have missed Chertsey for this but forecast at time favoured Chertsey, oh well hindsight is brilliant. I might limp up to Palace to watch this coming Tuesday and cheer you on for a change.

Went to sign on early and was given the number 13 - great  I met up with Andrew and we both surveyed the bottom two corners, looking at all the bumps, potholes and manhole covers. We then looked up the high street at the hill and thought that this might not have been such a good idea afterall!

We then watched the womens race, during which Phil, Paul D and Sylv turned up to laugh at us, sorry I mean cheer us on

I then went home and explained exactly where the race was to my wife, Lisa, as she was coming along with my 3 girls to watch Daddy do his thang 8). My Mum came up from Turners Hill as well and my Mother in law came along for her first trip outside after her diagnoses and subsequent treatment for cancer. It was good to see her out in the fresh air after a very tough couple of months for everyone. And she enjoyed it :D

A quick chat before the race found that both me and Andrew were absolutely crapping ourselves. Don't know why, we just were

The race
I started towards the back but I wasn't too woried as I had it in my head that I would get spat out the back after a few laps anyway. But then as we turned the first corner the competative streak came to the fore and I wanted to be right in the mix. As we went down the back straight for the first time, about a dozen guys seemed to get away and I was stuck behind two riders, side by side who were just letting them go. I shouted at them but there was no way through. It was just too narrow :x

Up the finish straight I got past but I was 40metres down. It was now or never to get back to the leaders. A big effort for one and a half laps and I was back on. Thinking that I would now get a bit of a rest and a tow was a bit wishfull. Guy from Pearsons quickly told me after his race not to do any work at all down the back straight and save it for the hill. He was right! It didn't make any difference to me being behind someone up that hill, my legs were screaming and in the end they gave up

I had to settle in to a rythm that suited me, and the hill then became just, and I mean just, manageable with the last 5 metres of it being a crawl, which was ok cos it was downhill and a rest immediately afterwards. I was on my own for a few laps and then with the young Pearsons rider who put in a huge effort to close the gap to the leaders, with me in tow(thanks), but he had shot his bolt and proceeded to go backwards. Back to being on my own.

I could now manage the pain and my pace was very consistent. I was slowly closing down on the riders in front, who were now a bit strung out. I cant remember how many I caught and past but it gave me a boost every time. I then past a guy in pink (who was riding for pearsons :?: ) and he jumped on my wheel. We didn't have a clue of our race positions , but we took turns in doing work for the last 7? laps. There wasn't anyone behind us so our positions were safe, and it didn't look like we would catch anyone either.

Then with 3 laps to go the leader went flying past, lapping us, so we jumped on his wheel. The pain increased again to unbearable but there wasn't long to go. Just dig deep again.
I was trying to remember how many riders were in the main group and after a quick chat with 'mr pink' we came to the conclusion we were fighting for possibly 3rd but more likely 4th or 5th. To the last lap and I knew I could beat pinky in the sprint, which I did, but as we had been lapped we weren't sure if we needed to do another lap. We carried on just in case, overtaking the eventual 5th placer, and I beat him in the sprint again. The comisssaire said he had taken our first sprint as the result and the fact that we wouldn't have caught the 5th place guy if we hadn't been lapped and got a tow. I agreed with him and accepted my 6th place :D
I hadn't seen Andrew since the start, but I saw that he was pulled out towards the end. Fair play to you Andrew as you always push yourself to carry on, even though you dont like the hills at speed. By carrying on racing as you do at the Palace and with your determination, it won't be long before you will finish with the group. Top man :D

I was over the moon that I had dug in so deep and carried on as hard as I did. The cheers from my family and the Addiscombe possy all helped in making it a great day. Thanks for the support :D :D :D :D

Steve you da man! A nice performance I hope the family were suitably impressed... Well done Andrew another brave effort. Great photo's sylv. From the pictures it looks like Warrick Spence countersteers on the bends. That is, he leans the bike into the turn whilst keeping his body fairly straight - a bit like speedway motorcyclists. To be fair its probably something must of us do unknowingly but just not as effectively.

The London Dynamo rider with the bad leg who has that huge Seven was racing in the morning in Kent at the 3/4 race in Kenardington. It was quite a hard race so fair play on him racing in the afternoon as well, unless he has a twin brother, which I doubt.

Good result Stevie B, sounds like you were not just Shadowing, you were actually doing some work as well, good stuff.

Cheers
