I hadn't realised that Jon was that far ahead of anyone! When I saw him move to the front I was almost expecting him to shoot off on his own for the remainder of the race, but we were right behind him at the bottom of the last climb, but then he gradually edged us on the way to the top.

I had heard the Evans' guy's mate tell him "you'll win this one" before the race so I was ready to hold his wheel on the way up, but he didn't seem to want to be at the front of our group when he got the chance so I passed him on the inside of the turn, but didn't hold it till the end. He gave a massive shout I imagine of disapointment when crossing the line, I think of frustration from seeing Jon so far ahead :-)

If you take Jon out of the picture, it looks like a pretty close finish

Well that was fun.
Even bigger field than last week, but I did manage to get myself near the front for the start this time. I think with a field this big the faster 3rd cats looked around and thought sod this, as the pace from the off seemed much quicker than last week, particularly the first few laps up the hill. A sensible tactic as it gets rid of the likes of me so they can do their own thang.

Did better than last week and held on the the main bunch for 12 minutes, it then split in to 2 main bunches due to the combination, I think, of hairpin action and speed at the front. Held on to this second bunch until 18 minutes in so fairly pleased with that. So long as I keep improving each week I'll be happy.

The only problem was I just couldn't find a working group. At one point I saw a group of six ahead (3 Dynamo, 2 Dulwich, and another guy) and put my head down to catch them. They were just attacking each other all the time, so after about a lap of chasing I caught them, rode to the front and suggested we work together. I did about half a lap on the front then wiggled my elbow...nothing. I looked behind and they were all gone. They'd just attacked each other, there own team mates, until their legs exploded :? . Quite what they were hoping to achieve by that so far down the field I'm not sure, but they paid their money so it's their choice.

I carried on reasonable well and continued to pick up riders for the rest of the race as they were dying a thousand deaths. The only other time I really had any sort of group was when I was with 2 or 3 including a woman from Rapha Condor. Not sure if it was your friend from last week MattD but she was in a right strop last night, moaning about the slightest supposed indiscretion from just about every rider in the park, got her Assos in a right twist.

I too got asked to "step aside" after about 40 minutes to let the leaders finish, bit annoying as I'd only been lapped a shortish time before, but I did as I was told. Didn't want to annoy the organisers or get in the way for the finish.

It did allow me to get a view of Jon's victory though, damn impressive, he just cruised away from the rest of the field while still in the saddle. Congrats to Sylv and Matt as well. Racing with Sylv and Kieren the last 2 weeks (until dropped) I've seen just how well they position themselves and move up and around the group. Quality riding as it looks a lot easier than it is and you can't do it without being very strong.

Well done Sean, to do your first race at Palace and keeping going is no mean achievement. You probably noticed how many were falling by the wayside, and I bet you collected a few on the way round as they blew up.

Finished my race riding in with Toks from the hill. You had your head down, looking for your matchbox.

Finally - excellent support all night, plenty of encouragement, and I don't think my Mum (marshalling) missed a chance to shout at me once :D .

If you'd carried on across the grass by the time you reached the edge of the park you'd have been in the prestigious and exclusive  parish of Penge, SE London.

Seriously impressed with the Acc performance this week - I sense a real momentum in the club at the moment …. at this rate I recon the subs may need to go up just to fund all the winners membership fees !!

Ps. Miss Rapha needs to be treated with respect … I had no complaints from my behaviour last week – and her Assos looked mighty fine from my sheltered view …

Except you weren't having to avoid horses, just ducks ...

Seriously though, you aren't tempted at having a go at mountain biking?

THink they might be talking of someone else though - tight turn of the lake, isn't that the one just near the sign-on and into the downhill?

Think that's her Sean, black and white Condor.
Cheerful looking sole ain't she.
At one point having towed her and someone else round a lap I asked for help and got a load of verbal for chopping her wheel and she wasn't going to assist.

Apart from the fact I wouldn't chop a wheel deliberately anyway, I hadn't noticed doing it by accident so I can only assume it was a fairly minor one when she was coming down the inside at the bottom of the hill - perhaps I should've gone straight on and joined Stu in Penge.

Just to add a bit of irony in to the mix, towards the end of the race I had my wheel chopped at the bottom of that hill when I was lapping........another woman Rapha Condor rider. :D

Thanks for the stats you put up Matt with 23.5mph av. I had 22.5 for the 38 mins before I was hoiked out which just goes to show what a distance 1mph av is in that time at CP.

Not sure my stats are accurate. I left my computer running and I think the 23.5 figure might err on the side of caution. I think Kieran said 24mph.

[quote]I counted 24 laps
Time 48min

Doesn't seem too far off the "fast" race's pace, I remember marshalling last year the first guys in the E/1/2 were lapping in 2 minutes spot on.

... which makes it about 19 miles / 30.6 km (if 24 laps, I don't know how you can count them Kieran!), and a lap at 0.79 mile / 1.27km*

* or a bit more for Stu
