My first road race of the year, and my first experience of Team Addiscombe. Well done everyone, especially Sylv & Georgzilla.
A few breaks went and were brought back, so I began to think no break would be allowed to escape and relaxed a bit, just at the point when George made his decisive attack.
They'd got the best part of 30 seconds when another rider headed off in pursuit. I wanted to be part of the break, so, all or nothing, set about chasing. I popped off the front of the peleton and pulled rapidly away. I had no wish to inspire a chase of the break what with 2 ACC riders in it.
It took what seemed an age to catch the other chasing rider, but once caught we started to work together. The break was getting closer but ever so slooooowwwwwwllllly. The assistant commisionaire's cars moved in behind us, inspiring us to put more effort into the chase. After over a full lap of chasing, and the breakaway only inches closer we decided that it just wasn't going to happen and both sat up to recover a little before the peleton caught us up. It seemed to take an age. We both chatted about the futility of 2 against 6, especially when the 6 had George in there. The other rider had competed against him in CX this winter.
Having pushed too hard (will I ever learn?) I became a bit of a spectator for the rest of the race and my finish was let down by poor positioning in the bunch. Some scary riding in the bunch towards the end.
Hopefully the race has cleared some of the cobwebs, though. Roll-on next weekend.
