Headed down to Barcombe for the Surrey League 2/3 race this morning. 7-3/4 laps (8 times up the hill) giving a total race distance of around 60 miles. King of the Mountains points each time over the hill, plus a sprint point half way around the circuit. Points for 1st, 2nd & 3rd, with prizes for each.
My first race of the season, so my expectations weren't great. First 3 laps were a bit of a shock to the system. Little prepares you for that continuous change of pace that comes with road racing, especially with a bunch that seemed to want to chase pretty much anything down.
Tom Gilbey (I think) of London Dynamo did manage to get away from a small breakaway on the last lap for a solo victory. A 3rd cat who's apparently pretty new to racing. I doubt he'll remain a 3rd for long!
I languished in the bunch for pretty much the entire race and was happy enough with around 10th place at the finish. The finishing hill didn't seem quite so big & steep this year which is a good sign!
