It was nice to be in a break that stuck. A good event put on by Lewes Wanderers. PaulH reccomended the course, and it was worth the drive down - an hour away is about my limit for races I can get to.

The course was "rolling". I'm no grimpeur, but it was nice to ride a course that rewarded commitment. The terrain made it less easy for the bunch to just chase everything down, although it was heading that way for the first couple of laps. I tried to be involved in various excursions off the front, but to no avail.

Being in the middle of flippin nowhere made for very little traffic (a pleasant change), and there was only one bit of dodgy road surface (also a pleasant change).

At about 1/2 distance a couple made a break and the front started to fragment as a few others chased. Eventually, with the assistance of a hill, a break of 8 formed. It had the pre-requisite Dynamo & Redhill rider, so the incentive for the most represented teams to chase was reduced.

No outriders, and a long twisty circuit made it nigh on impossible to judge the gap. That's my excuse anyway for working perhaps too hard and not quite having the legs for the short sharp uphill finish. Content with 4th though.

Here's a lap of Hellingly - 10.6miles (17km) round & 570ft (175m) of ascent.
