hillingdon 14th march

Postby Stu Merckx Man » Sat Mar 24, 2007 6:18 pm

there was a big field out and i was pleased to see matt and kieren out there, no toks though

first couple of laps were un eventful and i was near the front. then suddenly i found myself in a small breakaway with one other rider. he led for half a lap and decided to let me have my go up the hill towards the finish line which had a very strong headwind. he beckoned me to come round, so i did but it was painfully slow going , and soon we were swallowed up.

it was very hard to stay near the front, and i managed it towards the middle, because going along the back straight there was always a gap on the right so i could just surge up that.

for me from the middle onwards the race was pretty un eventful, i as completely pinned in at all times, no matter how hard i tried to get up the front i could not get through the maze of cyclists.

however, after laps of trying i was making some progress, when out of no where the bell went...now i had to really make an effort...trouble was everyone had the same idea and i made no more progress...some people were so desperate they went onto the grass!!
the sprint for me was not really a sprint, if anything it was slower than almost all the other laps going normally, i was in the saddle completly boxed in enjoying an almost musical sound of swear words from people all around me frustrated they were pinned in.

im pretty frustraited with it really, i had so much left in the tank at the end it was almost unbearable! trouble is i think im in that state of limbo--> i feel to strong to be in the middle of the pack the whole time, but im not quite strong enough to stay up near the front for a whole race with 2nd cats....so i suppose that means more training :D

good average speed of 25.1 mph, it felt pretty comfortable.

cheers
stu

Have a look at Ade's blog it seems we might have to rename him Sofa King (lazy)

I think you could possibly ride near the front most of the time, just don't waste valuable energy chasing every single half-hearted break attempt in the wind.

Are you going to be able to race Crystal Palace?

Just to echo what Stu said: it was a frustrating race. So many riders all wanting to be in the first 10 and no way of getting up there.

Stu looked very serious pre race and decided against losing his Zen-like concentration by chatting to me and Kieran and decided instead to while away the time in his own heated support vehicle. Me and Kieran slummed it in the club house trying not to get high on the fumes of embrocation.

Spent most of the race mid-pack boxed in. Pace was comfortable and I expected it to be harder racing against 2nd cats. Legs felt a bit tired in the last few laps but that’s probably cos I’ve got no miles in my legs. As Stu said, the sprint was a non-event with violent braking and even more violent language being bandied about. Kind of glad I went , just to get the first race of the season out of the way. Sorry if I sound a bit miserable. It was a cold , windswept day with too many riders vying for too little tarmac. Ho hum!

Had a nice ride back with Kieran (Stu getting ready for his imminent pro contract, decided to use his support car). Clocked up about 68 miles including the race, so it’s not all bad. :D

Dont get too frustrated.

If you can average 25mph and keep up with 2nd Cats then you should be able to do well in the Surrey League and SERRL races. They are much more fun as well.

More training maybe....but what sort? Improving functional threshold? Vo2max? Improving tactics or maybe just riding with 3/4's initially on a hillier course to suit your abilities?

Maybe later look into getting a couch?

How much of that time was spent drafting? He did say he his tank was empty at the end of the race suggesting he wasn't being worked hard enough...

Also Stu is still fairly young and has been riding since last August so has lots to learn still and his aeorobic engine will improve futher over the years...Just be patient.

When I was Stu's age back in 1990 I could easily keep up with E123 at Goodwood averaging 25mph just sitting in the bunch. So much energy is saved...

Yeah, I'm gonna do my first Surrey League next w/end. Looking forward to it. Gotta be more fun than riding around in circles in a freezing west london industrial estate :D

HI Adam,

I'm down for the Cutmill one. Don't think I'm ready for a long 2/3 race yet.
How are you getting there? Want a lift?

where abpouts is the cutmill circuit!?

im ok for transport, unless you want to be 'green' and car share...

when you say down for it, you mean you've pre entered right, it seems the best way atm.

stu, im getting restless just thinking about the mayhem we can create, fancy a kamikaze last lap flyer... as soon as we hit the bottom of the finishing hill for the penultimate time, we GO!

unless we get dragged into a break before that anyway, which will not impress me, not one bit!
