West London CA 30

I'd heard the Bentley Bypass could be quick so was hoping I might get close to Joyce's 30 record of 1.16.16.

It was not to be.

Set off into a head wind. Accelerated to 24mph and tried to settle into a rhythm. No chance. Soon was struggling to do 20mph. Seriously thought about packing in at 1st r'bt and heading back to HQ. Decided to stick it out to the 2nd r'bt (the proper turn) and see what the return leg felt like. Return leg felt better with tailwind but my back ached and my legs weren't smooth. Couldn't stop thinking about having to turn again for the second leg up into the headwind. Was awful. Kept entertaining thoughts of sneaking back to HQ. Finally got to the finish in what I thought was a long 1.18...but timekeeper said 1.19.01. Hmmph. Slow thumb I reckon.

Truly dismal ride. Did not try hard enough. Luckily I rode a bit better on Sunday so finished weekend feeling more positive than I'd started it.

S Davies of ACC also rode on Saturday but I forgot to check his time - doh! Sorry.

Your right, on a good day it can be a quick course. But when there is a head wind on the outward leg it is a real killer. I now exactly how you feel. Well done for finishing. You`ll be flying next week.

What I need is to stop eating cake and sweets :( , stop thinking negative thoughts about how slowly I'm going, and just pedal a damn sight harder.

Sorry to hear about the family illness but as you will see you didn't miss much in terms of the racing. Wasn't a fast day for anyone.

oh but cakes and sweets are so nice. On a trip up North on saturday I devoured a whole bag of chocolate eclairs in three hours by myself. Yuk! how disgusting is that? have you knocked Road Racing on the head now Tamar?

Mmmm, I love chocolate eclairs too....and a large bag all to myself is, sadly, not unusual - oink!

I've done one road race this year - a women's race at Hillingdon. It wasn't particularly successful. I've lost my confidence and am scared of corners and other riders. Racing round Palace feels like a lifetime ago.

Will probably stick to testing this year...although might do a bit of track to try to improve my speed and get over my fear of other riders.

Oh no what a shame. Not taking risks and being sensible you must be getting older  Still I hope the door hasn't been closed permanently. Touch wood I haven't had a real bad crash but I do wander if my approach to competitive cycling would change if it did happen. I was following this guys' training blog on 'cyclingforums'. In April he had this bad crash, while racing I think, which sadly meant part of his lower leg had to be removed. That sort of accident is extremley rare I know, but reading about it certainly wakes you right up. :(

The first year I was guiding in Colorado (just thought I'd drop that in  ) one of the guests was a guy who'd lost his left leg just below the knee as a result of a motorcycle accident.

He was (and still is) racing successfully in the veterans category of the national Enduro cross country mountainbike series. He regularly plavces in the top ten with no allowances against his "able bodied" competitors.
