ACC Evening 10 - 12/6/07

Well well well, cast your minds back to a passing comment by george in another thread...

[quote]I don't reckon any prima-donna sprinters could go below 6

Well lets just say us prima donna sprinters may not be able to climb as good, but we sure as hell can time trial...

Evening ten this evening, didn't feel particularly confident about it at the start as i have had three relatively hard days on the bike with the shoulder and all. So my only plan was to avoid being caught, and just see what i could do. In a PM Jon reckoned a 26 was a good time for me to aim at, so aim i did.

Started off relatively calmly, tried to get into a good rythm. The first couple of minutes were agony. But after that i settled into it and i felt ok. So i just put my head down and kept pushing...

By the half way mark i had caught my two minute man (my minute man Carl was a DNS) then i as i rounded the round-about i passed Simon O, my three minute man. I had seen sean on the other side of the roundabout shortly before i turned, but he was well out of sight and i didn't see him again until the finish.

So head down once more, just concentrating on keeping the legs turning at a metronomic average cadence of 109. Yes, thats exactly the figure i wanted! The last couple of miles seemed to fly by and i crossed the line on what i thought was 24.14, but was confirmed to be 24.22. Anyhow, my thoughts turned to the previous ACC Road Race A teams attempt to unsettle the TT'ers. Wait a minute, didnt George 'only' do 24.24.

Oh yes he bloody did! So two seconds my friend, two seconds. You can have your Box Hill challenge, ill have the Road Racers 10 best time thanks!

So as you probably gather im rather pleased with that time, especially given my shoulder is still a source of pain every now and then. And the knee isn't properly healed, which i could feel throbbing as it continued to soak another dressing.

Not bad for a 'prima donna sprinter' huh George. Oh and didn't you use tri bars!? I didnt!

C'mon!

Meanwhile the other newer Jon (Camden) nearly held off his marauding son, but still won the handicap, with his son Sam second, and myself 3rd.

I know Dave Kennett won with a time of 21.57 (which doesn't really count as he's a Paragonian  ), not sure who was 2-5th but i was in at 6th beaten by Jon, and Rich V no doubt. But give me a 'proper' TT bike, and half you guy's experience and ill be snapping at your heels :P

Well, i can't think of anything else to say now, gloating over. At least till i catch up with you george! Was a great evening, all credit to Jon, Joyce, Tim and Ian, the steadiest pusher off'er ive had. (your only the third mind but i couldn't have felt more at ease while you were holding me up!) Thanks for your support guys.

Cheers,

Adam aka the 'prima donna sprinter'

I kinda like that nickname actually... Sean, it won't let me change my username to it, have you banned me or something!? It keeps saying 'that user name has been disallowed' Stop spoiling my fun!

Sorry I couldn't have a go at the "10" last night - work and all that getting in the way (again) !

Good to see a few ladies out - well done Carole, Lisa and Jo. Looks like there could be a bit of a tussle between you 3 next time round :D . I'll try and make it too.

A good night, didn't expect to catch Sean so getting him by the turn was very nice :D , although to be fair I could tell he wasn't on it as I approached.

I've decided to ride most of the Evening 10s on fixed to use them for fitness and any good times that come are a bonus. The advantage of fixed is that you don't let your mind wander (as I have in the past) as you've no choice but pedaling that one gear all the time with no let up, certainly focuses the mind.

For gearing fans I rode 44x14 which is 83.5" according to the CTT handbook. It seemed about right and I felt pretty good all the way round, although I know I can go a bit quicker on it, assuming the wind stays as calm as it was last night. For some reason I couldn't get my legs spinning properly on the downhill swoops so only had a max of 33.5mph from the flying finish.

All in a great turn out and as usual thanks to everyone involved, Joyce, Tim, Jon, and the mighty M for kicking my arse off the start line.

Well done to all particularly Sam who knocked 3 mins off last weeks time and caught his Dad on the line. :D

George, I think you'd go quicker without tri-bars as when you ride and hammer it along you tend to use your upper body to help deliver the power. The tri bars probably stopped you doing this as they locked your uper body in place.

This was my first TT and have to say very enjoyable once I stoped riding.

Thank you to the organisers and a big thank you to Andrew for the loan of a front tyre after mine split on the way to the start.

Looking forward to the next one to see if I can beat my time.

I had a good night as well and i was only the pusher  ( nearly everyone scored 8) )
Good to have a natter with everyone,'specially as some were shaking as it was their first TT.
Just relax guys i wont drop you!
All the regular TTers were there and you could see they were happy and focused and just sped out of the "off", Rich V was so up for it he did it twice  - as 29th "off" he had time to power round the course at an obscene wattage- thats why they decommisioned Waddon power station when he got a turbo  .
Jim and Dave K just made the start with seconds to spare... just time to roll to the start, reset the 'puter and off, fantastic times as well, both riding lovely bikes as well, i wantoneofthose.
I also had a long chat with Joyce- "el presidente", she does so much for the club, a real unsung heroine.
Big grins all round and maybe a few retches :o from Daniel!
Good night out- endorphines released what more do you want? Beer says George!
