SERRL 17/06/07

This morning Paul H and I travelled down to Kent for the 1,2,3 South East Road Racing League’s Weald course.

The course was around 6 miles and we had to ride 8 laps, the surface was a bit rough not the usual SERRL standard of lovely Kent tarmac.

We were initially concerned that on the A road used as part of the course there were some traffic lights which held up the race on a couple of occasions which is a bit dull.

There was a long drag up this A road then a tight narrow winding descent which got more fun as the race went on.

On the 2nd lap just as the Peloton was accelerating away from the lights Paul gave us the nod so we duly slingshot off the front going off on the Agreeable breakaway.

We were joined by 1 other had a small gap for a while but didn’t manage to stay away.

Then after the descent I felt myself slowly going backwards in the Peloton, suddenly I felt a hand on my backside give me one almighty push back up the front of the group, I looked round not to see Paul but Danny Rudd from Cityhub, nice gesture but I couldn’t work it out?

Then suddenly my riding started to become laborious and much more of an effort, I was finding it difficult to keep my place in the pack,
I didn’t think I’d used that much energy in our breakaway.

Then I drifted towards the back of the pack and got dropped, I tried sprinting to get back on but to no avail, then the commissionaires car passed and I was out the race!

I couldn’t believe it! I was thinking sh1t I’ve lost it I couldn’t understand what was up with me?

I rolled to a halt and heard a rattle from the front wheel, on inspection noticed a couple of spokes had broke and it was well out of true.
It wouldn’t even spin and was binding on the brake blocks.

Ahh so that was the problem, I was more relieved than gutted then with my DNF.

Paul was almost taken down on the wet last corner before the finish but managed to stay upright but was almost brought to a halt by the fallen bikes and riders, but managed to finish just outside the bunch.

Now I want to use this as an excuse to get a decent pair of race wheels.

What do you think about Campy Bora’s

George, I have a pair of Bora`s. They are 3 or 4 years`old now and are still in perfect condition. As they should be because they are so expensive. Adams Zipps may be a better option.

BTW I got them second hand from a Aussie who was strapped for cash.
