Bad luck on the break attempt from the bunch Stu, great effort, we really thought you were going to stay away.

I hadn't realised Steve had gotten 3rd, well done!!

In ours I think six got away in two groups, very early on (when I had decided that chasing during the first half was pointless ...), Stu attacked with one to go while I was doing my best to slow the pack into the hairpin, they all went flying past me after it though and chasing back left me badly positioned and exhausted for the sprint, we went past Stu on the climb unfortunately, I got second to last and Stu dead last

well done to Steve and Hal for getting in the points, and to Andy who stayed with the front bunch on his second time at Palace. Another frustrating race for me, did a few turns on the front, with Toks's friend from Brixton Cycles (Quentin?) and then later again, but in the bunch finish I wasn't placed well and my sprint needs working on (tell me something I don't know!).

Cheers Kieran :D After barely hanging on for 12laps 2 weeks ago i was pretty amazed to find myself in the top 5 on the second lap last night.. Got a bit over excited and jumped off the front. Soon got dragged back but lead the bunch round for a lap which was cool. Unfortunately it took me another 15laps to recover from the effort but started to feel good again coming into the last 10 and got myself up towards the front and had another little dig off the front (got caught even quicker this time tho). Was a solid top 5 on the penultimate lap and then got swamped by about 15 riders as the horn went (must pay more attention to the lap board!). Didn't have the legs for the sprint, but pleased with the progress.. Maybe next time...

Well done to Steve and Hal for getting in the points, awesome effort.

Well done to Hal and Steve.

Sneaked up to Palace last night with the intention of watching rather than participating but as I saw riders pinning numbers on their backs, I couldn't resist getting involved.
Managed two practice laps before starting at the back on the left hand side :-(

Got off okay despite the position but as we hit the drag round the back I was struggling to stay on. I managed two laps at the back of the group before I got dropped off round the back climb. Spent another lap trying to get on before giving up and riding round with a rider from another club for 3 more laps. Pulled over onto the grass after that with a smirk on my face.

I still enjoyed the experience and will be back next week looking to extend the number of laps I can hang on.
I'm getting a license this week and new bike to follow so hopefully will be better prepared too.

Not such a full field today which makes the start a bit more straight forward. About 10 laps in 2 guys got away and I was unsure whether I wanted to be in a break for 25 laps so I did some work at the front to see if we could pull them back in. A couple of others working but not many and we were not closing the gap. Unfortunately the gap was now too big for me to bridge solo so I had to be done with staying in the bunch so sliped back a few places to save some juice for the finish.

On the bell/ claxon lap I came up to the front sort of accidentially but decided as we had a few other ACC's in the group I would be as well to sit it out, head down and make a blast for it on the climb.

I took a couple of sprinters with me up the climb :( but when the Shadow came blasting past I was happy to see him get 3rd beating the two guys who had been sitting in all race and had come past me.

Good job jobbed. Just a shame about the break staying away.

Good efforts by the new comers, Ed I recon that was a good effort given the cyclocross style bike and first time attempt.

wow some great reports and pics there and as for the results, pretty amazing.

Hals just getting stronger and stronger, a good result has been on the cards for a long time now and as for Steve the Shadow, about time he put his fast as f*** sprint to good use.

Well done all for what sounds like a great evenings racing.

Postby Stu Merckx Man » Wed Jul 02, 2008 6:33 pm

well last night i was not feeling very confident (at first!).

i was not sure how my legs were feeling, as they still felt slightly jaded from the saturday brighton run.

the race started at a ferocious pace. there was a large london dynamo crowd, and they did nothing but attack for about 5 laps. on one of these attacks i followed sylvs wheel, only to find myself in an early 5 man breakaway, but thankfully it came to nothing, else it would have been a much harder night

eventually the pace settled down to a nice 25.2 mph. my usual tactic would be to hang around at the back, but this week i thought i would have a go up nearer the front, sylvs usual area. i have to say it was much more enjoyable, but about the same hardness. however it was much more mentally stimulating than being at the back, which is a way made it easier, as there was more to think about than just the fact that my legs hurt.

fairly early on a break did get away, that stuck. it had a couple of london dynamos i think, because they went to the front and kept the pace fairly high, attempting to prevent attacks.

for the first time in an e/1/2 at palace i was bieng pro active, and on the offence a few times instead of always on the defence. sylv was also riding a blinder, doing strong turns on the front, and going with a few attacks.
with 18 laps to go, i was feeling fairly good, and a guy from the arctic premier team went off the front, i decided to go with him, and rode off the front for a bit. when i got over to him we did a couple of turns together, but then he seamed to give up, and we drifted back into the pack, which by this time seamed half the start size.

it was also around this time we lapped the 3/4s, and it was here i felt the biggest benifit of riding up near the front, in that i got through no problems, whereas at other times, when im at the back i would always struggle to find a way through. however, once we were through i found myself being asked to do a few turns to help us pull away. usually this would not be a problem, but when they 2 men in front of you doing there turns are guy powldrige (sp) and i think kevin knox, it is a bit of a tall order! but i did a couple of turns to make sure i didnt get a back name.

for the remaining 12 laps or so not much happened, there were still plenty of attacks, particularly by a guy in orange, who was off the front every other lap! and the pace was still high, but i was having great fun at palace for the first time since last season.

as we got to 4 laps to go i stayed off the front completely as i was saving myself for an attack. with 2 laps to go, at the top of the hill i launched my first attack. i was 3rd man back, and when a london dynamo rider peeled away i made my move. i went as hard as i could and opened up a small gap, and to the sound of cheering coming from the sidelines as i came past the addiscombe supporters by the finish. i didnt get very far, and just strung it out a bit, and pretty soon it was all back together. but i was not done yet!...

the pace slowed down now, no one wanting to go too hard. as we hit the hill i was in the front line of riders across the hill. as we got near the top guy powdrige and i think kevin knox headed to the front and lifted the pace slightly. i was right onto them, poised for my next attack.

in exactly the same place as before i sprung between them catching them un awares. my logic behing this 2nd attack was that no one would suspect it given i had attacked the lap before, i was optimistic it might succeed, but realistic it was more than likely doomed to failure. i opened up a fairly decent gap almost immediately, and this time had even more cheers from the sideline which was fantastic, a real good feeling. at the bottom hairpin i had about 50m or so. i sprinted out of it and whipped round the right hander and drove my feet into the pedals towards the sweeping left, its probably the fasted i have ever taken it, and i nearly went down the bank. as we hit the hill proper, i looked back and only had about 30m, and i could see they were chasing hard. as we neared the top of the hill i blew up completely, and the pack shot passed me, and as sylv says i finished pretty much last out the group  but its the best last place ive ever come. i was just so elated that i was able to attack properly in an e/1/2 race for the first time.

its also the first time this year i feel i deserved to race with the e/1/2s at palace :D

there were a lot of dropped riders this week i think, so i wouldnt have finished dead last (i hope!)

cheers

Nice one Stu

On reflection there are two things I could/should have done,

- pay attention to your second attack and go with you as I was either in your wheel or the wheel after (can't quite remember) - we might have stood a chance sharing the work

- or, once you'd blown and seing as I was not far from blowing too, wait for you at the top of the hill, so that we could have a comedy sprint for last place (or crossing the line together hand in hand)

Sylv, great ride last night, as usual. You make it look easy and you always bag a good result, well done. I like the way you quietly go about your business 8) .

Stu, nice report :D . Well done, I'm glad you enjoyed it last night. You said to me a couple of weeks ago that you wished you could enjoy the E12's as much as last year in the 3/4's. Well obviously now you've reached a level where you can. I look forward to seeing how you get on for the rest of the season - no pressure then

Congrats to Ed for taking the plunge last night. The first one is always the hardest. You'll know what its all about next week  .

The Race
So I did it again, didn't I :( . After last years 'not listening to the commissaire' episode and thinking I'd won but hadn't (race distance 2laps less than E12's, not 3, as usual), I was intent to make sure I was always fully concentrated on the race.
Mmm, unfortunately this wasn't the case last night  .

The race started off ok, pace was comfortable, a bit of jostling for position like always, but all in all things were going ok. After the Brighton ride on saturday, which was my first ride since 5 days off the bike, my legs didn't feel 100% so decided to put the powertap wheel on and use the race as training. But after a few laps of sitting in, my legs felt ok and my mindset for the race changed.
When the 2 guys jumped off the front on lap 10 or so, there didn't seem to be much reaction from the main bunch, which told me one of two things. They were either too good and the bunch knew this and let them go, or they weren't good enough and the bunch knew they would come back. Either way, I wasn't going to be doing anything about it  . A few laps later (and this is where I made my slight faux pas  ), we caught and swallowed up two guy's on the hill.

So now all to play for, head down, concentrate on position, save energy and keep out of trouble. Easier said than done :? As soon as you get in to a good position, you find that one lap later you're shuffled back in to the pack as riders come up the outside, or inside of you, up the hill.

With 10 laps to go and the pace not too hot, I started to feel very confident of lasting the race and finishing top ten, hopefully better. I was looking around me at the other riders thinking, 'I can have him, and him and him, no problem'. Its amazing what confidence does. The person I feared the most was Hal, but that was ok, I didn't mind that, he's Addiscombe.

Things didn't change much from then on, no one wanted to show their hand too early. A couple of small digs went off up the hill but were soon brought back and the whole bunch got ready for the mad last couple of laps. The previous 2 laps were really quite slow and this played in to my hands even more :D .

Serious concentration now, I have to be top 5 on the last lap at the bottom of the hill, otherwise its asking too much. Anyway, across the finish line with 1 lap to go, round the outside and into about 8th, perfect :D . I looked up and Hal was at the front, probably a bit earlier than he wanted to be but all the same he pushed on down the hill, round the bottom bends and on to the hill. Wow, he was going like a train and had taken two guys with him. Damn, there was now a gap back to my little group, but no time to panic, get your arse in gear and get after them  . The gap was gradually closing but not enough for my liking, I needed to push a little bit harder. Halfway up the hill it was now all or nothing. My legs were responding well, power and speed were good and there were no signs of fatigue or lactic, yet. But then - cramp in my right calf, no please not now. I changed pedalling action on that side, shortening the muscles movement, and this worked :D . Round the top bend now and I nearly overcook the corner, narrowly missing going up on to the grass, but the speed is good and I'm catching and passing all except one guy up front. Legs are screaming but I'm catching him, I'm catching him, but the finish line is quickly getting closer and closer. And then with 40 metres to go, the realisation that I will catch him before the line, yes, brilliant, fantastic, I've won :D . Embarrassingly I let out a big shout of delight (or as Andrew said, a roar), only to find that we were sprinting for 3rd place as the two guys had stayed away afterall  ( the other two were lapped riders). Oh well, I can shout out for coming 3rd eh . While it lasted, probably a minute or so, it was such a great feeling to have won - well I thought I had you see  .
At first I was thoroughly embarrassed when I was told, but then found the funny side of it  . Thanks Andrew for the picture of the lion, very good.

Mmm, I'll keep quiet next time. Hopefully one day there will be a next time - a proper win I mean

Great riding again Hal and Kieran. Well done to Mark, showing good form early on, and to Andy too for coming back strong towards the end. You both looked good early on in the race but I didn't see what happened after that, until seeing Andy again towards the end :D
Roll on next week
