Dunsfold cross round 12

Postby George » Sun Dec 21, 2008 7:52 pm

Nice warm weather today around Dunsfold aerodrome for the 12th round of the London League series, WOW have we done 12 rounds already!!!!!
Down in the team bus today were Andrew G, Paul T, myself and Keith Wahman who very kindly agreed to supply support for us agreeables.
So we had a good group of ACC racers Paul, Andrew, Aoden, Mark, and me.

Well todays race was a big one with lots of elite mens teams from far and ride racing with us, I was gridded to the front row, how cool is that so IU was lined up with all these big guns. Looked behind me on the starting grid and it went back a dozen rows with over 140 riders in the main race.

I got a flyer of a start along the long stretch of tarmac that led us up 1km to the rough stuff, I sprinted and got to the head of the pack and was leading into the first corner :D :D . Then we boomed straight into the thick moist ground that just sucked the power out of our wheels, through the boggy section and down through the fields at the far end of the circuit.some

2 riders just sprung off the front of the pack and disapeared up and out of sight, I've never seen speed like that in cross it was awesome, I was in the next group and the pace was fast, well it was flat out as far as i was concerned and I was having to sprint for all my wiorth out each and every corner to stay in there.

A few laps of this and I had to ease off a bit and try get my own pace going which was a little more accommodating. I could see a group of 5 riders coming up in my wing mirror containing Kevin Knox and Matt Seaton so when they latched on to me I nestled myself in there.

For me this group seemed a little too relaxed so I got on the frond and wound it up for a lap or so, this seemed to have the effect of whittling the group down quite considerably, I kept asking the otheres why they were panting so much but didn't get much of a reply at all.

3 laps to go the 2 leaders lapped me to my suprise, this was just as I put in a huge attack on my group up the tarmac, I even overtook Jody Crawforth and Ian Feld so unlapped myself for a brief period. 8)

with a lap to go just me Matt and another left as Kevin had messed up the boggy section, I spun in the little ring for half the lap then cluncked it onto th big ring and launched and attack to get away from them, this seemed to have a great effect and I sprinted up the finishing straight on my own for 10th position.

Got a serious hacking cough now from all that effort, I felt like I really should have been able to stay with that group just ahead of me which contained Andy Warterman Dulwich paragon who was on a roll today and Stuart Jones london phoenix whos a possible league threat.

Sylv even rode down to cheer us all on with a couple of others, a good day of sport was had by all and everyone really enjoyed the suffering and punishment, bring on next week.

Big thanks to George for going so far out of his way to pick us all up. Thanks to the Addiscombe support crew of George's parents, Sylv, Ed, and Ben. I've said it many times before but it really is nice and does help to get a shout from the sidelines when you're racing.

I had to get a cyclo cross in before the year end to complete the full set (okay apart from bicycle polo Jon  ) for this year and really enjoyed the race. I thought the circuit was good, there was a really boggy section that become very tough later on once you turned off the tarmac finishing straight but I managed to pedal through it every lap by sticking it in a bigger gear and giving it a lot of welly. There was a couple of comedy face plants in the mud in front of me including once by one of the leading riders which was very funny. A load of cack was building up by my rear brake and just in front or the rear wheel by the bottom bracket. After the race Keith pointed to the rear cage too and I hoiked a great compressed slab of mud out of it, God knows how the chain kept running through that lot.

The leading two was staggeringly quick and rode the course as if it was tarmac, awesome speed. The rest of the top riders including George were also very fast and most impressive to keep that pace going all race regardless of the surface they were on at any given time.

Like a lot of riders once the race strings right out I rode my own race. I was never with any little groups but did have the company of an Evans rider (also on a mountain bike) sucking my wheel all the way round. The home straight had a strong head wind so it was hands in the middle of the bars, tuck right down and TT it each lap :D .

On the last lap I could tell the Evans rider was going to try and nick a place off me. No way was I going to let this happen. Call me old fashioned but I thought that was a bit out of order. Fine, racing is racing, but when you're comfortably down the field I consider it good manners if you've sucked someones wheel all race to let them cross the line ahead of you, it's not like we were competing for any prizes or real placings.

Coming on to the tarmac he came out of my wheel and tried to pull away. Oh no you don't so I grabbed his wheel up to about 200m to go, I came alongside him here hoping it'd put him off but alas no, so with 100m to go I gave it everything and did a good ol' bike throw to nip ahead and get what I considered my place back :D . No idea where I came, plenty in front of me but I think a respectable amount behind me too, will have to wait for the full results to find out.

Great result by George in such illustrious and experienced 'cross company. Hopefully I'll be able to make the two Herne Hill rounds in the New Year as a bit of CX is good fun and a nice workout.

Great to see so many Addiscombe at the race today, both riding and spectating. The course was mostly fairly straightforward, 80% boggy grass and 20% tarmac. Mostly it wasn't too wet but very sticky slowing everthing down and making it a bit of a slog, not that that stopped the leaders, the £50 prime for the first lap meant I was getting lapped before I was half way through the race. As time went on the mud built up on the bike and parts of the course turned into genuine Belgian gloop.

As for the race I had a relaxed start from back the grid and spent most of the first two laps ducking and diving to where people were going at a similar pace. For the second half of the race it was ding dong between 2 or 3 others but I couldn't shake them off properly. The tarmac section proved key as any gains made through the gloop disappeared into the headwind on the taramc. At the end of the last lap I thought that I had made enough of a gap but again 500m sprint on the tarmac soon saw it disappear. Not sure where I finished 20th to 30th I guess but still a good day out.

I don't know quite where they got that form? I know I wasn't going terribly well, but definitely finished in front of her. She overtook when I was de-clogging the bike a few times, but then went back past her later on.

Sorry Paul - I caught you half way through the race, then there was a bit of cat and mouse going. You stopped to unclogged your bike and I passed you - you then went past me when I took a tumble, but I passed you again at the hurdles on the penultimate lap and didn't see you for the rest of the race. That's cyclo cross eh ! 8)
