We Did It New Club Record!

Postby George » Sun May 10, 2009 1:14 pm

Well we had a float day today with less than 1mph of wind the tops of the trees were not moving :D although it could have been a tad warmer.

A last minute change of course and instead of riding all on the A1 we continued further south and then a 5 mile out and back on single road. This added a bit nore climbing but was still a good fast course.

I slotted my disc wheel in the back and Xentis front so the Tandem looked like a real mean machine.
We were starting off right at the back of the field just behind Fat Baz who was seeded fastest rider.
The other Tandem was a DNS so as long as we finished we would finish first :)

Got going well and the first roundabout came up a bit too fast for Paul as we just about made it whilst missing a very nasty pothole

Tonking down the A1 we wound the bike right up to warp speed and could keep it cruising at 31+mph, it seemed so fast, so much faster than a solo with the same effort, riders we caught were rapidly ejected out behind us.

As I was the stoker on the back there was very little wind and just Pauls back to look at, on the odd occasion I poked my head out only to feel the strong gust of wind so kept back in the aero tuck. Paul seems to lean to the left when riding, so if I sat straight then we would veer sharply to the left, I found that if I looked slightly to the right and kept my left forearm off the clip on pad then we were perfectly balanced.

Now we had a record to beat and had to keep pushing it, at the turn as we went into the roundabout fat Baz was exiting so we were only 30 secoonds behind taking a minute out of Top seed, which was nice

Rejoining the A1 northbound and there were a few serious drags to ride, this seemed to slow us down a lot more than the solo due to our weight but once over the top it was full speed ahead to the finish line.

Crossed the line with 1.02.19 taking nearly a minute out of the old club record that had held since 1937, boy oh boy Mills & Boon must have been quick in their day

We won the event outright beating all the other solos and took 2 mins out of Cammish and just beat Fat Baz.

I wish I could ride a solo at that pace it would be awesome.
Great Agreeable morning and were both really chuffed at the new club record, I wonder how quick we could have gone if we rode the original course.
Thanks Paul for getting us round safely, I must say Paul sure knows how to ride a tandem.\

Nice one, sounds like great fun. If Paul can keep that thing going in a straight line with you honking about all over the back he sure as hell deserves a medal. :D

Cheers

Great stuff, a hearty congratulations to both of you. Brave using the disc, it ain't intended for tandems they do a stronger one for them.

Paul controls the gears though Marek  .

Good stuff P&G.

Those chaps in the thirties didn't hang about. Around the same time they set the world tandem hour record which was only broken about ten years ago.

Cheers Marek,
George's riding style gets smoother the faster he goes, so all the time we're over 30mph, it is like cruising along at warp speed. We had a "moment" at the first roundabout as the approach is uphill and normally the tandem slows down, but George was shovig it along, so we came into it faster than I expected, negotiating the 4*4 and the pothole was tricky to say the least - I almost had to use the brakes

I was riding just within my max HR for an hour - 170 and the speed was good, until the lumps at the far end where we slowed to 17mph on the long drag to the turn. Whipped round the turn roundabout (31.07 1/2 way) which was really tight, had to freewheel round that one. Had hoped to get there a bit quicker, but knew we were still on for the record. Once again, lost speed on the drags, but over them a long 45mph stretch (where was the 11?????) and whipped over a couple of roundabouts without slowing despite George trying hard not to pedal (what do mean the gap between those cars was too narrow  ) and a sudden lurch from the back as George altered his position -fortunately controlled OK. Avge speed had dropped to 28.5mph - not enough - bridge to engine room, we need more power  Was just managing to hold 30mph all the way back apart from a small bridge - 1 hour gone, not far now, round the corner....no finish (S****T - course change meant it was further up the road...1:01 went by - could see the flag up the road, big effort up to 32mph and zip through at 1:02:18 (on my computer - rounded up to 1:02:19 by timekeeper.) Never mind, we had done enough - to crack a Mills and Paul 72 year old record - ecstatic.
On our warm-down ride, George's qupte of the year " I couldn't get anywhere near my max HR" D'ohhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh

Congratulations to the both of you. I was speaking to George at the Cafe on Saturday and he seemed well up for the challenge and also brilliant news that the long standing record has been broken. Whoop whoop!!

Brilliant stuff! I thought it might have been a bit too breezy for TTing as I made my way round the Hampshire Hilly 100, but for once it sounds like it was calmer oop north.

Will you be bringing out a set of cigarette cards to mark the achievement?

Edit: By adding that second the timekeeper has ensured that you matched by PB (for a 25  ).
