Hounslow 100 31st May

A DNF for me this morning :( .

I woke up with what can politely be called a jippy tummy. Just about made it out of the smallest room to be able to drive to the HQ and get there with just enough time to get changed and off to the start. Arrived at the same time as the other 3 Agreeables in George's van.

Really I should have DNS'd as I was "empty" but decided to start and see how it went and if I could re-fuel on the go. Short answer is no I couldn't. I couldn't eat without my stomach starting to do a bit of a washing machine impression.

I kept to the energy drink and had a gel on each of the first two laps, as these were just about okay, but without fuel I knew I wouldn't be able to complete a 100, you've got shove some food down your face and have something in your stomach. The speed wasn't very good either so there really was no reason to carry on.

I pulled in at the end of the second lap, after 40 miles. My Dad had said he'd pop down for some support so I felt disappointed to have given him a bit of a wasted trip. He had a little spin in the nearby lanes though and we gave a shout to George and Rob for a lap or two. The "we" included PVT who'd also pulled in after 2 laps. He'd decided to ride fixed as there was a prize on offer but the drags on that course are a bit, well draggy, and a couple quite steep to keep repeatedly hauling a fixed over so he'd called it a day early too.

Lessons learnt:
1) Dodgy stomach in the morning = don't try and ride a 100.
2) Don't think I can do a 100 on my TT bike at the moment. Up to 50s and I'm okay but with the current frame (a touch too big) then a 100 is a bit of a step to far. Road bike with PX 50s for the SCCU 100 me thinks.
3) Don't ride a 100 on that course again. It's a rolling 20 mile up and down loop. I did a 50 on it early this year and that was just about okay, but the tedium factor of a 100 and 5 laps on it is more than I can take. The SCCU course may be harder but it's more interesting.

Bad luck. Suprised you even rolled out to the start feeling like that. Might have got by for a 10 but to take on a 100 is just mad...mad I say...better luck next time.

Well Rob and I managed to finish so don't know what all this fuss was about

Hot morning today so fitted an extra cage to the rear of my seat tube, lucky I did that as at the finish had drunk the lot.

This was my first 100 mile time trial of the year and was looking forward to getting a good time down, even had an eye on going under th 4 hour mark, but knew this would be a big ask in the best of conditions.

On the first of the 5 20 mile laps I had the average speed up to over 26mph, but this really wasn't easy and the wind was starting to get stronger every lap, this seemed to put paid to my +25mph average :x

Managed to catch Rob at around 40 miles for 10 mins, sorry Rob, and caught the odd glipse of Andrew on the opposite carrigeway early on.

Had a much higher cadence than usual and tried to keep it at around 95rpm, this was very useful up the drags.

Was a shame then at 60 miles to see them both at the side of the road cheering me on :o

After 65 miles was getting a niggling pain in the butt which required constant saddle movement and the odd out the saddle honk to try and get some comfort, although this did seem to wreck my rythm somewhat.

with 10 10 miles left I caught no.83 for 8 mins, he was looking bit jaded, I shouted him some encouragement as I passed by then a few minutes later he came back past and said "I've just had an energy gel!"

This was a real hard ride today in the strong winds and took alot out of me, I've only just resumed conciseness.

Finished with a 4.14 in the end, a sh1t time I felt, but the rides been done and if you want the 100 trophy you've gotta beat it and be in it to win it

Rob rode a 4.35 in the end, its a finish though.

Andrew I think this is a fast course with light wind, I don't think its really a rolling course just a couple of drags so.

I think you're right it probably can be pretty quick if the wind stays down, my only visit before today was for the Charlotteville 50 and the wind picked up then too. I only really meant it was too rolling and draggy for the gear Paul had on  . I think I'd find it too dull for 5 laps on a 100 though, with the 2 1/2 for the 50 I was getting fed up of it  . I think I'm going to pop back for the Farnham 25 on 21st June.

Well done to you and Rob on your rides, the field was very depleted towards the end so I think quite a few DNFs. A good time with the wind. You must have suffered a bit towards the end as Paul and I were marking you off Nik and after 4 laps you looked like you'd have been on for about a 4.07 or so.

Unlucky Andrew on getting the spats, hope you are feeling better now.

Well done George n Rob, I don't know how you done it at those speeds, a 10 is bad enough.

Fair play, hats off to you.
