May Flyer 2009
What a lovely day and great to see so many of the club members out at this years May flyer, offering 100 and 50mile routes.
The Plan
After last week’s Nova Colli and the impending women's regional champs next weekend (50 mile race around the Ellens Green area.) I decided to ride the short course as fast as I could.
Miles 0-19
Clare joined me until the first check point in tearing up the tarmac on a mostly flat and down hill 19mile. No one over took these ladies, we were flying, displaying some fabulous, newly acquired downhill handling skills from our trip to Majorca and awesome uphill cadences and spinning techniques thanks to our new compact gearing systems.
Miles 19-30
From this checkpoint / feed station where the course splits I was on my own Time Trialing the rest of the way. The next 10mile ish section is through undulating shady lanes where I got to play with my gears LOTS; trying to weigh off spinning fast to save my glycogen versus good old fashioned power all the way to the next check point where you rejoin the longer course en route.
Miles 30-49
Hoping that I might find some speedy chaps to ride with i was greeted at this final checkpoint by a few flashy old chaps all geared up whom disappointingly proceed to stop for a proper lunch!! I ploughed on lonesome leaving them to their ploughmans and caught a few Sunday riders up one of the two sneaky hills before I was on my own again flying solo on the the flat section towards home where I averaged 24mph.
To think last year we did this course in 4+ hours , this feeling was brilliant. Just shows what a good winter can do for you.
Woop woop
I know I only did the Half Pint Course but I got a Gold in 2 hours 47 and fastest lady!! Woop woop.
Loved it
Loved the course, well marked out with much of the route in shady lanes and I hardly saw a car the whole way.
Feeling fit and ready, I’m looking forward to next weekends regional champs. SCARY!!
Well done every one and see you at the Dragon Ride.
