Anerly 50

Down on the Horsham course this morning with Rob RE, Andrew G & Dominic.

The weather was great very little wind at all. I really felt pain in my hamstrings today as I think I did a bit too much bending down DIY yesterday. This really ached my legs and prevented me from really giving it some wellie.
Still I had Andrew to catch 7 minutes ahead of me, managed to get close to him after the first lap, but then Andrew really started riding like I've never seen him ride before, I don't know what it was, new Planet X bike or what but he was shifting and the for the next 15 mile I really struggled to reel in that final minute. In fact I only caught hime with at Southwater

Finished with 1.58.24 not the fastest 50 for me but good enough to grab the club trophy from Dominics grasp :D sorry Dom you were obviously too busy reading your powertap than riding

Thanks to all the helpers who cheered on us Agreeables, Graham, Paul, Jon, Chris & John to name a few 8)

I tweaked my back yesterday doing DIY does that count.

Strange day really. I have gone from using nothing when racing to my Powertap. So have power, speed and HR all at the same time.

Was really unsure how to ride this so just started as normal and tried to work out what a good figure to ride with was. Anything above 25mph was a bonus and this and above was achieved with between 230 and 275 watts. This meant that I didn't let myself go above 350 watts on the drags and I rode the race like that. Some of it seemed bum clenchingly slow and yet at times I felt I was going really fast and a bit too fast early on (on rpe) but the computer seemed to like it. The last 15 miles my legs were telling me no but the computer was saying YES. I was hacking along between 25mph and 30mph most of the time. Drags not included.

Got caught by a flying Shaun Kennedy at about 20 miles but he was the only one. He went on to record a 1.51 something.

Got caught at a few roundabouts to a complete halt but felt I had done well. Disappointed with my time of 2.00.16. Thought it would be quicker. Disappointed to be beaten by 2 mins by George as I was only 30 seconds down before halfway. You must have this pacing lark sorted George :D But overall pleased with the ride and how I felt.

George, my average power was 247w. Watch out next year

Thanks to the marshalls and Mr PVT for the shouts.

I can't work it out either - he should be closer to a 1.45 with that power, 1.50 at the worst ..

George your holding similar power for a 10mile time trial.

Do you trust the ergomo figures?

I like 50s :D

As George said a good morning for time trialling, so no excuses then.

I was hoping for a good time today as on previous 50s I've started a bit too slow and then hammered it for the second 25 to bring back the time a bit. Not been too shabby but not as good as I'd have liked.

High tech stuff  - I taped a few time and distance reference marker to the stem to keep my speed up a bit more earlier. It worked and I knew I'd started faster than before, with a roughly 1.04 first 25 split. I picked it up on the second lap as I got in to my stride and was feeling pretty good. I clocked George at the furthermost turn about a minute behind me so it was nice to keep him at bay 'til the 44 mile mark. I then had George to chase home to the finish :D . Very pleased with my time of 2:05:40 and hit the 2.5 mark I'd been aiming for to knock 5 mins off my previous best.

The new frame (which fits me better) felt more comfy particularly towards the end where before being a bit stretched out started to tell. The only problem I had was not having fitted the bar end shifter for the rear gears in tight enough meant it came out after about 20 miles. It was held in place still by the bar tape and internal routing but did mean I had to change gear by holding it with my right hand and shifting it with my left. Not ideal but my extensions are quite close together at the end so not a big problem.

Post race stats:
Cake - 1 bread pudding, 1 rock cake.
Tea - 2 cups.
Recovery drink - Rego at the HQ, Marston's Pedigree at home.

Thanks for the shouts on course to all that made them.

Cast in order of appearance:
Robert Royle-Evatt 2:03:17
Andrew Green 2:05:40
George Brent 1:58:26
Dominic Lowe 2:00:16

Well done all, particularly Mr  on the huge PB.

Most impressive bit of riding of the morning; the bloke going round Great Daux roundabout on a motorbike with his knee on the ground. Second most impressive; Keith C overtaking cars at Great Daux and heading off towards Broadbridge Heath in the outside lane.

Peak power for 2 hours was 269w if that is a better indication.

Yes, I was wondering the same!

My coach is talking about getting me on power at the end of the season, doesn't sound like it'll be an Ergomo I use...
