Wednesday chaingang from Butlers & Coulsdon

I know all this training business makes us sound a bit serious but, well, some people really are into this bike lark so feel free to talk about all training & self improvement related topics in here

[quote="Sylv"] Rob and I turned back, and the following 15 minutes were some of the best I've had in recent memory - I don't think we dipped below 25mph, and I maxed out my mtb at 35.5 on the bypass. We were passing traffic at warp speed - brilliant. Like a ride on the rollercoaster, I'd done it once more if it hadn't been for the thought of riding into that wind again beforehand!

I know just what you mean - coming back from Redhill yesterday lunchtime doing microbursts (10 second big gear sprints every 3 minutes) The last interval coincided with the final downhill on the coulsdon bypass - 42mph! Hell of a tailwind. :D :D :D

Didn't think I was going to make the stop at the lights

[quote="Sylv"]What do you mean about the turbos Rob, are you thinking of giving up?

Nah, just realising the limits of turbos. Must get out on road. Good ride back last night Slyv, Cheers.

Kind words indeed Paul. I lost you just after the Shell garage on the roundabout and then got stuck at the lights. Not too worried as I had planned only to go to the next roundabout along (Longbridge).

Saying that I wouldn't have been there if it wasn't for Marcus. He gave me a nice little push to get me back on just going past the M23 and then gave me his wheel to follow on the climb out of Redhill. I was very grateful :D It still amazes me how easy you all make it look. At one point I was on 52 x 13 and spinning away while the rest of you only seemed to be in the middle of your cassettes.

From a testers point of view I am really looking forward to seeing George time-trial, he just seems to be able to keep winding it up and keep going regardless

On the 46*12 I was spinning at 128 rpm there!

If you were on 53*12 you were at 124 ;-)

That's what I hoped you meant!
Actually I think I might be the opposite - could do with some turbo work!
Have you got a spare then?

I've got a spare turbo, I offered Mr Green the first try out but heard nothing back. If you want it it's yours for £30 it's only a year or perhaps two old. I bought myself a kurt kinetic, the kinetic feels a bit nicer to ride altohugh it doesn't have a variable resistance setting like the monoura does.

Sorry Rob misunderstood your post. I have a turbo (basic model) just hate using it so it spends most of it's life in the garage. Not worth selling so I keep it for emergencies.

Wait 'til Toks reads that  .

Ok thanks i think i might have to have that Rob

If it doesn't get used at least it will be useful to warm up for mtb races!

Is it very noisy (ie could you use it indoors?)

Thanks

Ok i'll keep it for you, it produces noise but hard to compare it with anything - similar to a washing machine going full speed perhaps? Also, I'm not sure how much the roller moves, it might not reach all the way to a 26" wheel.

That's great thanks.

A 26" wheel with knobbly tire believe it or not is + / - the same circumference as a road bike wheel with skinny tire.

Even a 700c wheel with cx tires will clear in a mtb frame, some mtbers race cyclocross with that setup (and disc brakes obviously).

I can get to just under a 1000watts and not even get into the 53/12. Do you really think there's any point to variable resistance?

Yeah, It gives you more resistance variables. More options for your workout.

dude you're joking there's people that can push 360watt for an hour (53/15)on the KK and can sprint up to 1800watts with normal gear set up. Are you treating it like a Spinning or Gym bike?

They don't need a KK to be able to do that though do they? They could produce the same numbers on any turbo. Varying levels of resistance wouldn't inhibit a persons ability would it?
