I know all this training business makes us sound a bit serious but, well, some people really are into this bike lark so feel free to talk about all training & self improvement related topics in here

[quote]What was the 'six point seven' quote about?

If you can produce 6.7 watts per kilogram of body weight at threshold, then you can win the Tour.

[quote="Sylvain"]Alrighty. Matt though? I thought Elliot's name was Roland

Whoops. In my (hastily-prepared) defence, I know someone called Matt Elliot and got carried away. Apologies to you, Elliot and the real Matt Elliot

It's gonna take some serious slimming down!

Matt is spot on!. To win the tour de france Dr Ferrari (AKA Dr Evil) suggests that your threshold power needs to be at or near 6.7w/kg (obviously you also need a great team and lots of luck etc too) That means if a GC guy weighs 70Kg (same as me!) x 6.7 and he'll be pushing 469watts for an hour. Thats the kind of power your average 3rd cat could hold for about a minute or perhaps two at best.

Just to break it down in ACC terms; in RichV's stonking 10 TT ride he managed to hold 350watts for just under 20 minutes. If we say Rich is 85kg (sorry if I'm wrong Rich) that gives his threshold power of 4.23w/kg. Now if Paul H rides the same time trial and averages 310watts and weighs 69kg this gives us 4.49w/kg. Now pure power on the flat assuming aerodynamics are good will definitely give Rich the honours. However once things start to get hilly (eg the tour) the newly qualified third cat/box hill champ with a better power to weight ratio will win the day. :D

I can put out more than that but not as much as 350w and will be lighter than 69kg in the summer. I have the aerodynamics of a parachute though.

I'm just reading Micheal Hutchenson's book about his hour record attempt.
His threshold power was 400W and Lance Armstrong's was (if memory serves from the book I gave to Sean) something around the 480W +. Impressive considering he weighed about as much as my right arm.
However, having said that, I think Mayo and Tyler went into the 2004 TDF with higher watts per kilogram than Armstrong.

That is mental. As a test I just did a 20 min session at treshold at the gym (nearly gave up at 15) and averaged around 250-255. Alright that might be innacurate and the position on those bikes is pretty horrendous, but that's only 4w/kg (and no way I could do it for an hour).

I guess someone with 6.7 could ride away from the field at an Elite race like Hillingdon and ride on his own for 1.5h (if not lap them) ...

Next time I will test Tok's "1-2 minute at 470". :D

I would say that machine is under reading your power output.

I think Toks mentioned the other day that his figure was 4 watts per kilogram, so it might be about right.

Yeah yeah stop showing off power man, it was just a rough guide. You'll still get you're preverbial kicked by the big fella in a flat TT  [quote]Next time I will test Tok's "1-2 minute at 470".
yeah sylv give it a go. The power reading on your average gym bike ain't gonna be super accurate but it'll be interesting to see what will essentially be your anaerobic power output. :D

Hi, for those of you that may read my blog how's it coming across? I'm not sounding like some weirdo am I? Only, I'm starting to get emails from a bloke called Quentin. Yesterday he sent me a picture of himself in boxing shorts. Elaine (my girlfriend) hasn't stopped laughing all week  http://www.londoncyclesport.com/Blogs/B ... =0&V=1&SP=

Seriously, it's a pretty cool blog.
However, it's frightening how much training your doing.
3x20 mins @ 90% MHR is just mind blowing. And we've only just started February. I reckon some pros aren't doing that kinda stuff.

If you don't seriously kick some butt this year, I'd be amazed.
Aiming to retain 2nd cat status?
I reckon you could push on for 1st cat.
Wouldn't that be cool
:)

I've also been reading Wittgensteins blog which is also quite interesting, but obviously not as hardcore as yours.

Thanks dude. The W has contacted me a few times and you're right his blog is really interesting especially coz he represents a less typical 3rd/4th cat riders race training. Have you checked out any of these. http://www.roadcyclinguk.com/Blogs/Blog ... =1&V=1&SP=
