I know all this training business makes us sound a bit serious but, well, some people really are into this bike lark so feel free to talk about all training & self improvement related topics in here

It's not just heart rate it's power as well.

45 minutes at a moderate endurance power (about 60-65% of FTP) on the road is a doddle but doing it on the Turbo is a real killer. Perceived effort would go from about 5 to 9.

I think some of us are simply not suited to turbo trainers

I would suggest you stick at it and build up to 20 minutes over a couple of weeks.

Bear in mind as well that you should be seeing your heartrate increase over the course of the session so don't worry about starting off below your target rate (or finishing above it).

One way to help develop a smooth pedalling style is to do one legged intervals on the turbo. Unclip one foot and rest it on the frame of the turbo near the rear hub, then pedal for a minute with the other leg. You really find out where the dead spots in your pedalling are, and you have to work at it to keep it smooth. Clip in and pedal normally for a minute, then repeat with the other leg. This session can also help to even up your legs if one is stronger than the other.

Cheers guys. Just gotta persevere with this. I've got limited time during the week to train and have decided that focused turbo work is the only way to improve (as much as I love my Saturday morning canter with the club).

Re: the one-legged training. My wife noticed that my right leg was bigger than my left (she's a physio and notices these things, as a bloke I was completely oblivious). When I measured the circumference of my right thigh, it was nearly 1" bigger than my left

Clearly some rebalancing required.

[quote]Is it best to try build up to 1 x 20min or build on the 2 x 5 min (i.e. 2 x 10 min, 2 x 15 min, 2 x 20 min)?

I would personally go for the 2 x 10-15mins approach just because I think you can get more work done that way. But of course each to his own. Make the break in between a good five or even ten minutes. After a light low gear two minute spin I sometimes get off the bike and treat myself to a peice of chocolate, drink, change music or whatever.

Also don't expect to get the hang of turbo training straight away. It takes a while to get used to - approximately 7 or 8 sessions in my case - and you need to do it regularly. Its interesting that in some Physiological research participants, even experienced riders, are given a few weeks to adapt to riding on turbo/ergometers.

As Rich has pointed out the perceived exertion at even moderate intensity levels (80% of max) is horrible! Get music that motivates and distracts and try not to keep looking at your watch. In fact cover it up and take occassional peeps. Good luck and Chapeau for giving it ago

Dr, I just luurve your blog. Honest.

Brian- the more you ride it the "easier" it will seem, there is just no let up

no freewheeling and no draughting. I'm great on the turbo- just sh1t on

the road tho  .

Cheers Ian, I believe ya. Once it gets warmer I'm gonna come out be on one of your magic hilly mystery tours. We can chew the fat on 'big brother', why England need to drop Frank Lampard? and how Ajay must still make 3rd cat status a goal, despite his new fatherhood status and that small problem of jogging for 26 miles :D

Over a course of 2.5 months I've gone from 2 x 15 mins to now 1 x 60mins @ 95% of FT, all done on the turbo...

On the turbo there's less variation in wattage on the raod it's very spikey!

i went out for a ride one day with the intention of finding it, and got to box hill and decided to sprint up untill i couldnt go breath, so im hoping i got my max as i don't want to have to go through something like that again

is there a more scientific way of doing it though?
