Polar vs Suunto

I know all this training business makes us sound a bit serious but, well, some people really are into this bike lark so feel free to talk about all training & self improvement related topics in here

Polar vs Suunto

Postby Sarah_M » Wed Apr 16, 2008 11:16 am

Hi all,
My Garmin 205 (forerunner) has developed a worrying habit of letting in water :( so I am looking into a new computer for running and cycling. I am getting excited by Suunto and Polar HRMs with pods for running and cycling (including turbo sessions). What do people think of Polar's and Suuntos?
Cheers
Sarah

I like my Polar (725X) for cycling, I also have the foot pod for running but to be honest I don't really that all that much.
Do Suunto do a cycling computer? I could only see running/hiking stuff on their site.

They have these two options as well as GPS but no cadence :-( Having said that, I think you do begin to learn to judge cadence pretty close. I can tell if I am about 80, 90, 100 or above 100.

The t6 HRM looks awesome.

aha I see.
Looks pretty good, don't know anyone with one, worth finding somewhere/someone with one and having a play.

The 725: http://www.polar.fi/en/products/multisport/S725X

You're right the cadence isn't essential, although it is nice to have it displayed on the screen all the time and you can notice immediately if you're slacking, and it's quite handy if you're aiming for a particular cadence to glance at rather than try to count.
Quite cool to look at the download data later and see how your cadence/speed/power etc change with altitude, you can look at a climb and see where you were doing o.k. and where it all fell to pieces. :D

Sarah this is the one I got, If you have the budget you'll never have to buy another device for your bike ever again.

I'll show it you on Saturday. It can also be used for your running, it will track you and everything,

PC World have the Garmin Edge 305 for £130 at the moment. Prob because a new one is due out soon but the 405 running one (just out) is now worth the extra £200 between it's price and the price the Forerunner 305s are available for at the moment.
