CR - 27th March '10

We had a sensible sized Training Group today with about 8 of us, plus a couple of extras picked up along the way. With a bit of sunshine I had wondered if there was going to be a repeat of the 20+ riders  reported a couple of weeks a go.

DK has to be the best lead out man in the area.

The return ride was interrupted at the narrow bridge on Lonesome Lane when Dan ended up in the ditch. I hope nothing is too damaged Dan, although I reckon those shorts are a write off.

Thanks to all of those who sent well wishes to Michelle. It's very appreciated, and I pass them all on.

It takes something not to get dropped on the way though!

Good ride, cheers to Keith for the white powder - banana flavor gets the nod and i'll be switching from chocolate for next order :)

A puncture past the Starbucks on m23 but I would still rather that than being stuck in the jams towards Croydon there

Sam and I rode down with the 17s today - Monty and Graham doing the VC bit - really excellent ride, everyone taking their turn at the front, good company. As usual the pace really picked up towards the end - not sure what happened with the sprint - I felt really good, I tucked in behind Sam and jumped first and drove for the line - then waited for Sam and everyone else to pass me - but incredibly I hung on and won it!!  but I suspect everyone was just being kind to the old man!

The ride back was fun - Sam was on Monty's wheel in the cafe - but Monty got the jump on us and left us for dead as he chased after the group that had just left. We chased Monty but he had the legs on us and couldn't close the gap (of course another interpretation is we used great tactics and deliberately left him hanging out their in no-man's land  ) so we kept him in sight relaying each other at a respectable wind assisted 35/36 kms. George and co flew past and we though for a nano second that we could hang on but thought better of it, then keith came past and tried to keep with him but again it just wasn't happening.

Wifey's just put the dinner on the table... back soon...

I had a good day out...

I hope Dans ok, he looked rather beat up, such a shame as we were all going well... i thought he'd been hit by a car as i came round the corner to all the cars and cyclists and then guys rushing down the bank bit to the bushes!

I would of cried my eyes out if that happened to me! Fair play to him he was obviously hurt and shaken but just cracked on! Legend.

I followed him for a while after and the cut on his leg started to bleed a bit, with each downstroke it was pulsing a bit more out...!

I left my place at 7.45am and met up with Keith L and we got to Starbucks for a drink at about 8.40ish where we chatted about the benefits of compact cranksets and shorty handlebars. We got going and then arrived at CSS for 9.05am where the group had started to arrive. I decided to ride with the 19s today as have been out of action for a while with a cold and knee problems. The pace out of CSS with Dan on the front was decidedly more than 19, but was not too bad and don't think anyone was finding it too hard. Great to see Geoff hanging on in there, can't believe how well you are riding nowadays from when you first started with the club, awesome.

A few digs through the trees at Rusper where it got a bit split up, but we regouped at the top. The group split into two with 5 of us taking the dual carriageway. Andy E, Ben F and Dan and Richard (I think). Was a good run in with Dan doing quite a lot of work on the front in the run up to the sprint. I tried to get a jump on the group in the run up to the final bend but unfortunately Andy E managed to grab my wheel. I did my best to keep the pace up as high as I could but Andy was going nowhere and he came around me and took the sprint. I then hit a bliming great big pot hole and had to then go back and retrieve my water bottle which had gone flying.

Rode with another group over to Box Hill, I only know Marcus in the group but it was a steady pace, just what I needed. After Box Hill and turned off to head back to East Grinstead. Back over to Reigate and I decided I needed to stop for refuelling, so popped into the Texaco garage for a Pork Pie and a Double Decker, heaven. Spun the legs back home and felt quite good. 130km on the clock, a few more weekends like that and reckon I should be back up to full fitness soon enough.

Cheers

In fact it's Nick, not Richard, but I answer to most names! I really enjoyed the ride out today with a good number of the regular faces in the 19 (or so...) group. Good company and good fun.

Dan - hope you are ok. Seeing the tear in your shirt and shorts I expect that you will be hoping the possible new kit will be sorted asap!

Sorry Nick, I am rubbish at remembering names and I am sure you have told me a few times before. Get better soon Dan, hope is nothing serious.

Opted for week 2 of 18s. Mark's metronome cycling gave us a good but comfortable pace 18.4mph. Group worked well and kept together. Won the sprint which is virtually unknown for me. The way back was fast but managed to do a few turns briefly losing contact on the hilly bits. Nice to be on the Colnago for first time this year. Need some more distance rides and maybe 19s next week.

Mmmmm Pizza and white wine, you should have turned around and offered an arm (maybe a slice and a glass), I needed something to tow me up that bliming hill out of Reigate toward Salfords.

Cheers
