Turbo or rain

Postby Marcus » Tue Mar 30, 2010 8:14 pm

Have been working at home all day today and didn't get out on the bike at lunch time as planned come 4.30 looked out at the grey sky and driving rain covering Caterham on the hill and felt the turbo in the garage with Kiss FM was the best option.

However once I got to the garage I thought Just get out there Mark, be a man! So went for a ride thgrough Caterham, Chaldon, Bletchingley, Nutfield, Blindley heath and back through Godstone to Caterham. So nice sweeping fast downhills and what seemed like many leg burning climbs.

The rain was cold stinging and relentlessly pounded against my face. The driving head and cross winds vicious and the potholes deep. Cold hands and Wet from head to toe. Is this really fun. :) Oh yes :D

Front light packed in, it wasn't designed to withstand these conditions, rear light intermittent. Am I going to make it home before dark :?:

Up Tupwood lane and through the viewspot in Caterham / Chaldon when bugger front punture. Hands too cold to get the tyre back on so warmed them between my legs for a while.

Finally got home just over two hours and over 25 miles.

It felt great. Not to be home but to have gone out.

So when faced with the same dilemma again, rain or turbo, it will definately be rain. It's much better than sitting in doors regardless of the weather outside.

It's great to cycle me thinks :D :D :D

Good man, there's only one option when the second is a turbo. Really cold rain driving in to my face for a while on the way home today, makes the shower and cuppa all the nicer.

Chapeau Marcus...you're a better man than me. Faced with the same inclement weather it would've been the garage, the turbo and some old school jams on my ipod. Although if I was outside and it started raining I would usually stick it out. I'm sure I've been to all those places you've mentioned but not solo it would've been following some one else wheels. I can show you a very exciting training loop in central london :D :D

are you taking the bike to wales and scotland then for some more of this type of action? Problem is then you have to clean/dry the bike or various bits will rust!

Awesome find there Toks.
I used to ride around the inner circle some lunctimes but I got so sick of it after about 5 laps.
How these guys did 160 laps I'll never know.
In the end I hit a ped who was crossing the road not looking where she was going. I broke a finger and my bike and she went to hospital with a head injury. Kind of put me off riding around there again.

Great loop Toks; to far for me to have a quick ride during the week but will attempt to have a look some time.

Need something flat today so will do a few laps of Kenley aerodrome :)

Would be great but will probably do some walking and spend some time with the better half's family in Wales. Might just be a little rude to disapear every day on the bike. Very tempting though, might just reconsider

David, I gotta be honest with you 95% of the time I ride the outer loop (2.7 miles). The inner loop is great for intervals if you like that kinda thing  . Of course ya gotta watch out for pedestrians during working hours

24/7, but you need to be aware of dog walkers, children on bikes and gliders which are not usually a probelm.

Jeez, don't tempt fate!

Hey Toks, do you ever see Robert Elms (Radio London Guy) cycling round the outer loop?
Apparently he's out there each morning with a couple of mates and clocks up about 150 miles a week. I think he rides a Condor
