Wet feet

Postby simonfrench » Mon Dec 05, 2005 5:30 am

Hi chaps and chapesses

Anyone got any recommendations for shoe rain covers (I'm not even sure what they're properly called). My aqua repels work but velcro at the back giving way and letting stuff in the heels.

Whatever you get will let the water in through the top where your leg goes in!
The ones with the velcro under foot are good as you can get them on reasonably easily and then get them tight.

Hi Simon.

Personally, I've never had any shoecovers that were totally watertight. However, the Pro ones I bought from GB's seem to be ok and, coupled with Sealskin socks, work well. I guess taking it to the nth degree, you could buy a pair of winter shoes that are fully enclosed - the benefit of having well ventilated shoes for hot weather is flipped when it's raining or cold.

Alternatively, I reckon the best thing to put over your feet when it's raining is a duvet.

I've got some Pearl Izumi ones that I've been using for a couple of years. I wouldn't say they're totally waterproof, but they do keep my feet tolerably warm and dry.

There's a velcro strap at the top to reduce water ingress down the calf. But the side zips are the main reason I generally struggle to get to CSS before 9.30.

Cheers chaps - sadly I have to commute by bike, so duvet - although the best option - isn't the one I'm allowed to take.

Appreciate I won't get completely dry feet but I don't want to change shoes so the overshoe option is it. Will have a look at GBs then, plus what's recommended on wiggle

I did the south London-Farringdon trip every day for years until recently - it's particularly hard on the dry foot if it's been raining. Kennington Road is always a laugh.

Anyway, my point was going to be that you should be able to find a decent range - with decent advice - at either Condor or Evans on Grays Inn Road in your lunch hour (if you have one).

I have the Planet-X overshoes which are cheap and chearful and seem to work OK. Elasticated strap underneath and velcro up the back. Fairly open on the bottom so they fit over road or MTB shoes.

By the way, do you have mudguards fitted? They keep most of the muck off. Otherwise you get as wet from the road as you do from the sky.

I've just bought some SKS race guard look-a-like things. I've seen a load of people on the commute who have them now and been thinking it's time to get some myself. Cheers for the info on planet X - they need to go over MTB shoes so will check them out as well.

Yeah I would go for waterproof socks as well. Although water will work its way in the top eventually, it's trapped and stays warm. Your feet go all wrinkly though.

Deviating slightly from the point, has anyone seen the guy who rides though London with two halves of a basketball attached to his handlebars covering each hand? I guess it cuts out the wind chill!

No but have you seen the 6ft tall guy who rides in on an MTB, fixed in top gear, wearing a gridiron helmet?

He's disappeared of late but he was there all summer - I usually caught him at Elephant & Castle

Just bought a pair of GorTex overshoes. Not tried them out yet but should keep the rain and wind out.
