Thanks Steve and Jane for your company today. I only had time to check the forum briefly before I had to leave. After Phil had to cry off because of his back, I'd planned to ride up to Farthing Down to see if any one else turned up.

Glad you like the ride - it isn't a spectacular ride but I think it shows the variety of scenery you can find in Surrey from the downlands to the flatter heath and lower lying areas; from really rural to main roads and of course, where the rich lot live

I have to admit that I was expecting a bit of traffic into Wisley, it being a nice day but I didn't expect THAT much traffic  That was ludicrous and rather spoilt a pretty lane over typical Surrey heathland - though it was hilarious looking at the way it'd backed up down the A3

Thanks for treating me - you didn't have to; having company was more than enough.

Thanks Amy we had a great "recovery" ride. You and Jane looking at snakes must take it out of you both, sorry if it surprised you  The Wisley garden centre definitely looked busy, they must either have a lot of stock on sale or a really good caf. That said, the cafe in Chaldon? at the far end of the ride was made all the more memorable by the guy carrying mace with his belly hanging out.

Thanks again Amy, a nice ride in the sun :D

(ps yep, we know, Clandon)

Oh come on - it was exactly the mileage I said it would be!! And once we got to Leatherhead there hardly anything you could call a hill

I've seen the snakes and geckos and lizardy things quite a few times but you seemed interested

Yes it would've been nice if the guy's gut hadn't been hanging below the level of his t-shirt

Glad you enjoyed it - I hope you will come again on one of my rides :D

Hope you weren'too knackered...

Sounds really nice - I'm gutted to have missed it but I could barely move. Not sure what I've done or whether it's from riding or hefting stuff around in the garden. I need it to get better quickly though cos there are big rides coming up.

Might do a few more miles with the boy tomorrow (InSeT day) and see how that feels. He's averaging about 13mph at the moment.

Good man, sounds like the lad's doing well. Always great to hear about a new sole getting in to cycling. Give it a few years and you can enjoy some quality bonding sessions with him towing you around the Redom GP des Gentlemen :D .

Never heard of that club

Might do that ride down to St. Ives Farm in a couple of weeks time (I'm helping at the Open 25 this Sunday so this weekend's out)

Anyone interested in an all day ride? Can't remember mileage but probably 70-80 miler (and I was pretty spot on for the Clandon ride... I did 66 miles so less 9 miles to and from Farthing Down...). Gets a bit lumpy on the way back but I'm not out to kill myself or anyone else... Can always find a pub on the way home... :D

Yes - in principle. Note that there are bank holidays approaching. I plan to do the CR this Saturday and see what it does to my back (is this what being old is like?). Also I'm "helping" with the 25 and might blow all my accumulated brownie points by going for the LBL watching.

To go completely off-topic, anyone got any advice on lower-back pain? Had it for a while but got much worse after riding a 55 mile then a 92 mile on consecutive days and trying to heft stuff around in the garden. Went out for an hour on the MTB tonight and it twinges when pedalling hard uphill (lots of weight to get up there) and also on rough descents. I'm hoping it's just a muscular thing but haven't bothered going to the GP to be told to take Ibuprofen and see if it improves.

Phil is the pain only after and during you time on the bike? If so you may want to consider a bike fit/set-up? if you have not had one already. I am not suggesting this will solve your back issues, but its worth getting your position correct.

I'd go to your GP and see what they say first Phil. Could be something very minor that just needs a bit of rest and get worse when you do something be that cycling or gardening.

Cheers Andrew. Seen GP, got drugs. Probably muscular not disc (hooray!). On reflection lowering my handlebars an inch then going out and hammering it 2 days in a row probably didn't help.

Re. Bike fit, I notice when I get tired, the effort feels assymetrical - i.e. one leg is working harder than the other. That might be a thing. Who around here does the best (value) bike fits? Corridori is probably my nearest. Thanks.

Try Nick De Meyer (PM him).

He was doing a cheap rate for ACC people a while back. £50-£100 I think and he comes to your house/work. Not sure if he makes the tea though :?
