wasn't there also a crash on the hill in the E/1/2 near the end?

Also wrt to safety and marshalling, when the triathalon is run at CP they cordon off the course by using stripy tape, and have marshalled crossing points.

Ah, yes. Probably the nastiest of the night, injury-wise, (and probably why I'd managed to block it from my memory) a touching of wheels and over-the bars leading to what looked like a dislocated shoulder, but could easily be a broken collarbone. Probably the only hospital visit of the evening.

I take your points on the track etc Kieran but I suppose it depends on what you book, how much you pay, the contract you have with the park. I don't know what the crits have but they are always run to my knowledge on a "marshal advises" basis rather than a "marshal enforces" one. Similar with the JBS road race, you can hold your flag out and ask the drivers to stop, but you can't enforce it if they decide they don't want to. Perhaps it should be more so in the park, not open road, but like I say it probably depends on the agreement in place. Most people do take notice of the race and keep out the way, even if you're an idiot you don't want to get hit by a bike travelling at 20+mph.

[quote="Grahame"]PS, when I raced, I always made it a point to do a warmdown lap and thank each of the marshalls that I saw. Not one single "thanks" on Tuesday.

Yes Grahame, we were much poor polite before the war    (That's the 1939 - 1945 war for those of you still in nappies)

[quote="Andrew G"]In the 3/4 race is was very funny as the guy who finished 2nd was going to win until he stopped pedaling, looked over his right shoulder, straightened his jersey and raised both arms. Then the bloke coming up on his left carried on pedaling and won  .

It was a broken collar bone, a friend of mine from East London Velo, David Barnes. Breaking your collar bone at an evening crit is definately not cool, even if it is the palace, however, that's racing.

I was nearest marshall to the last crash, but didn't see much as they were well back in the pack as it headed towards me.

Three went down, one was uninjured and got back on; the aforementioned ELV chap (who also had a smashed helmet) and another with roadrashed knees and elbows who wanted to get back on, but couldn't as the two remaining bikes were firmly enmeshed with each other and tree branches (took about three people to free them some time later).

Another ACCer marshall, whose name I forget, ran to fetch the St Johns medic who was there in a couple of minutes.

Hope he recovers swiftly Adam.

PS I did get a few thanks from racers, mostly the juniors and backmarkers though.

Me leading the 2nd chase group up the hill  (7"00)

+ lots of ACC marshall along the course
