SL Barcombe 02/05/10

Today was a bit of a shock to the system - I'd got quite used to the shorts & t-shirt lark. I went out to warm up a little before the race. It was raining. I went back in to put my gilet on. I rode a few hundred metres up the road, turned round and went back to put a thermal top on. It didn't stop raining all morning.

I'd not raced at Barcombe before, but I like the course. Dominated by one hill. Neither as big nor steep as Cutmill, but big enough to control how the race went. Big ring all the way up. It's also nice that the course isn't riddled with potholes. It's certainly not smooth, but there wasn't the the potholes that could feature on an OS map that are such an annoying feature of Surrey.

A field of around 50 2nd & 3rd Cats. PVT chief Comm. A couple of cars, 3 excellent motorbike outriders plus plenty of marshals to make for a safe race. The organisers also had 3 prime prizes for first over the line on each lap.

I managed to be in one of the 2 meaningful breaks of the day. 7 of us were away for half a lap or so, but the bunch seemed to be in a chasing mood today. Once we were caught, a lone NP rider went on a solo counter attack, a lone-break all the way to the end. Fine effort.

On the last hill, on the second section, my legs were screaming and I watched helplessly as plenty of riders came past, crossing the line in around 10th place. Makes a nice change to finish though, after getting shelled at Cutmill and puncturing at Bletchingley.

Back at HQ we all looked like we'd been coal mining, and now, over 6 hours after the finish I'm still discovering various bits of East Sussex in my eyes.

You think that was bad? Try racing off road for over 3h today. Cleaning up everything will take about half that.

Happy with +/- 10 th then? Hmm let me guess who the solo NP could be ...

Fantastic effort today Keith, with that weather earlier it would have taken alot of motivation to actually start the race.

Well done for that effort, well worth the training it will have gained you too.

Nice one Keith top ride :D

well done Keith and big Well Done Sylv. You neglected to mention that whilst racing for 3hrs in the mud - you won the 3 lap Enduro :-)

Results are up now. Nobody did all 7 laps - Rory (USE) won in 6 laps. By the look of it almost 90% of the competitors failed to do the distance in the 7/5/4 and 3 lap events!! My mate Steve was 8th in the 5 lapper and he only did 4 laps. The DNF rate must have been higher still as many pulled out without even completing a lap and thus disappeared from results.

Even if I had brought spare pads with me i'm not sure I would have bothered to fit them and go back out to race, altho the lure of the podium might have sent me out!

Lone winner was Chris Holmes - newbie Paragon. Dave helped police the bunch nicely so I hear

Scrap that actually - reading the various reports it seems everyone was freezing to death on the road. Off-road I wore a long sleeve top + gilet, and never felt cold.

Agreed Sylv, i rode the 4lap race. After 1 lap i had no pads left and my forks had blown their air seal, i couldnt see a thing out of my glasses so had to suffer mud in my lenses instead. Took me best part of 2hours to complete 2 laps and that was riding pretty much flat out but i was cold and miserable and had enough, god knows how you rode more laps.

It then took about the same time to hose the bike and all my kit down and then get all the mud off the car from the rally course to get out (apparently the caravans never made it out). Its the first time i had almost worn through the brake pad backing plate, Rory Hitchens was wearing down his discs with the calipers so he went right the way though! :o
