Cleaning tips: Rain stained clothing

Postby Toks » Mon May 03, 2010 11:20 am

I've got three cycling tops I'd describe as "rainstained" (proabaly a mix of oil and dirty water) and I'm looking to discard them since nothing I've tried has managed to get them clean properly. I've tried bleach, hot washes and even spraying them with vanish but no luck. Before I finally throw them away has anyone got any good suggestions on getting them clean. Cheers

Could try Milton the liquid cleaning stuff for babie's bottles etc. Worked on one of my brother's stained polo shirts.

Other option is to just wear those tops when it is raining, didn't know you actually trained in the rain Toks.

Cheers

A few years ago on the way to Charlwood I hit a diesel patch and took a slide going round a roundabout. My nice yellow winter ACC top now looked like a mechanics rag at the end of a busy day in the garage. Waiting in the queue for tea and cake I was discussing the art of getting the stains out (as you do in a queue full of men waiting for tea) Up piped Grahame who susgested WD-40 :? , yip I thought the same !! WHAT you must be joking right? Not at all he said, with a smirk of a man who sounded confident enough already to have tried it. Well what have I to lose? So sprayed the stains with WD-40 left it to soak for about 15 min then in washing machine. Repeated this a few times and hey presto most of the oily stuff had been removed to my amazement. Granted it wasn't perfect, but good enough to carry on wearing for another few years. It does smells like WD-40 after washing, but once it's dry no smell :D

Give them to me - they will match the rest of my stuff.

Thanks for the tips fellas. I was advised to use a bar of VANISH soap and scrub the top vigourously and its done a pretty decent job. I don't think a washing machine could get it that clean. Thats thirty minutes scrubbing one one top I 'll do the other two tops at the weekend :D
