Knee Pain: Cleat Positioning

Postby Toks » Fri May 07, 2010 1:54 pm

I've just change my cycling shoes and having reattached the cleats I'm starting to get some medial knee pain (innerside of left knee). A mistake on my behalf perhaps for not paying enough attention to the former position. So question. Do I move the cleats towards the outside of my shoe (towards pinky toe!) or inside to address the problem. The cleats are speed play zeros, everything else on the bike has stayed the same. Thanks for your help in advance and are there any other option I need to consider. Thanks :D

Do you still have the old shoes?

If so, I'd put the cleats back on those, exactly where they were. Measure, and go from there.

Both my cleats/feet tend to be in the same position on the shoes so first off you can try clipping in and look down when your foot is at the bottom of the pedal stroke and see if you can spot any difference - is the left further away from the crank arm than the right?
Equally what works for me quite well is to hold the shoes together sole to sole and place the heels together, then slowly move them together and you can sometimes see where the cleats aren't matching up.

May not work but those two tend to work quite well for me. From memory when I'd had a little bit of similar pain I think the cleat needed to be moved out, or towards the pinky if you prefer.

Once you've got them in the correct place draw around the cleat with a permanent marker.

Toks, there was a thread on this topic before that may help? Bike fit and knees.
If you're interested, I've kept a couple of cycling magazine articles on knee pain and how to solve it. pm me and I can send you pdf copies.

I should still have these articles.

Cheers chaps. :D Tonights, saturdays and possibly sundays rides will reveal if I've made the right adjustments
